Here's Mort Kondracke's review of Star Wars III as transcribed by me. The show will air one more time this weekend at 1:00 AM central time so set your VCR.
This was in the Ups and Downs segment of the show:
Down Star Wars Episode III: the Revenge of the Sith. Now on the strength of Steven Hunter's review in the Washington post. Steven Hunter, I have child-like faith in his reviews, he compared this movie, George Lucas'' movie to John Milton, to Shakespeare, to Herman Melville as a description of a good man descending into He-...into evil.
I'm sorry this was not the Godfather but having watched the movie what I found was it was physiologically vapid and I thought it was theologically sort of shallow but politically it was really offensive. George Lucas has been running around saying that George Bush is undermining democracy as this evil senator undermines democracy in the movie but the movie shows that what Hollywood liberals really want is something like the Jedi Knights unelected, self-selected elitist body that actually runs things when needed. A Supreme Court, perhaps.
