What does it mean to be a Republican
6-03-05 | Richard Persing

Posted on 06/04/2005 10:14:43 AM PDT by rpersing

My parents are Republican; I was raised on conservative values that defined the Republican Party. I have always been proud of belonging to the same political party that was home to Ronald Reagan, the greatest President of my time, and I believe history will dictate his all time greatness among U.S. presidents.

Recent events however, have created doubt in my belief that the Republican Party is the true party of conservative ideals. Don’t get me wrong; the Democrat Party is nothing more than an elitist, corrupt, immoral party that uses manipulation and self-serving ideologies for personal political gain. However, Moderates (spineless wimps who would sell out their constituency to maintain political positioning), are damaging the Republican Party with their “can’t we all get along”, “let’s share the power”, “we need bi-partisanship” ideas, led by our primary sell-out, Sen. John McCain.

It’s not popular to condemn a war hero, and McCain IS a war hero, no one will question his service to our country and his commitment to those who served with him. That was some 30 or 40 years ago, and his political career is far less noble, sacrificing our first amendment right to free speech, which he risked his life in Vietnam to protect, with McCain / Fiengold legislation, but this is not about John McCain.

Sen. Arlen Specter, who has served those of us who reside in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for years, lost my respect and vote when he sold out his counterparts in the House with his failure to convict President Clinton following impeachment proceedings. In this case, our Senator disregarded Clinton’s perjury and obstruction of justice, which denied Paula Jones’s her Constitutional right to have her case heard in court, but this is not about Arlen Specter.

The group of seven Senators initiated by Trent Lott and carried to fruition by John McCain, negotiated a compromise with Democrats to avoid the triggering of the so-called “nuclear option”, which would prevent Democrats from filibustering judicial nominations, continuing a practice that had not been done in the 214 years of our Constitution prior to Republican’s gaining control of the Senate.

Regardless of the controversy surrounding Bush v. Gore in the 2000 election, since then President Bush has won a convincing re-election, Republicans gained 6 seats in the Senate, and increased it’s majority in the House. This was accomplished not because voters wanted compromise, but because voters wanted a more conservative approach in policy, and the best way to accomplish this was to elect Republicans, even if it meant voting for the Lincoln Chaffee’s and Olympia Snow’s of the world. They were the least liberal of the candidates available at the time.

Increasingly, Republican politicians are mired in moderation, disregarding the desires of the voters, consistent in their desire to maintain political positioning, attempting to court voters who traditionally vote for those residing on the other side of the isle to increase their voter base. This is evident by our government’s unwillingness to seal our borders from the insurgency of illegal aliens, for fear they may offend Hispanics, the fastest growing voter base. Even President Bush, a man I greatly respect, sold out our citizens who volunteered to peacefully protect our borders from illegals, calling them vigilantes, to win respect of Mexicans.

The abandonment of conservative values by Republican politicians will prove to be devastating for the party if they fail to do what voters empowered them to do. The tables can be turned. Never forget, Ronald Reagan was once a democrat!

The Republican Party resembles a disorganized cat fight, at least since my family got addicted in 1856. The one time we got our act together it produced Woodrow Wilson.

The modern Republican Party was founded by Barry Goldwater and Ronny Reagan, it resembles the rat party of 1836, for good reason, the rats resemble the Republicans of Teddy Roosevelt, the Bride at Every Wedding and the corpse at every funeral, for some power reasons.

Every since I was scared into the Republican Party, at ten, by my GrandFather showing me pictures of Elenor Roosevelt, wife of the first dictator of the USA, I have voted straight ticket Republican and fought with the other 43 factions of My Party for greater freedom and lower taxes.

A good question. I assume there has to be someway the RNC can hang him out to dry but he was just reelected in 2004 I believe so that means for six more years he doesn't need the RNC and he is acting like it.

What was it called?

The movie? Spellbound. That's the Dali one. There are many other outstanding (artistic) Hitchcock movies, but that's one of my favorites for its particular artistry.

Just what we need, another fawning explanation of the Republicans' "Deer in the headlights" behavior. (/kidding)

You reflect the opinion of many.

The Republicans are no longer the party of conservatives. They are leftists --the RATs are worse, but the Republicans are not far behind.

Constitutionalists and conservatives have no party and have no voice anymore. All we have left are Reagan memories and what very old history books tell us about our Founding Fathers (new history books refer to them as evil).

If we are to reclaim the nation, it will have to be by revolt. There is no party that represents limited government and Constitutional principles.

Except for the weird contraction in the title, I agree with you completely. For the last couple of years I have looked on while Americans were stripped of their First Amendment rights, (McCain/Feingold) and Americans in the 9th Circuit were stripped of their Second Amendment rights thanks to an Appeals Court ruling. All the while the Republicans have done nothing or, at times, supported the effort.

After the most recent "McCain Mutiny" in the Senate I finally asked, "Why am I a Republican?" The American people have handed the R's power and they are scared to govern. I have no use for cowards. I will probably continue to vote for Republicans because the D's are the personification of all that is evil in this society, but I am through voting for Republicans just because they have an (R) after their name.

One thing about the language is that none of us invented it to begin with. We are dropped down into a flowing river of words and ideas at birth and try with various degrees of proficiency to swim. One time aeronautical engineer Wittgenstein comes along and says that anything that can be said can be said clearly, but that the truly fundamental things can't be said, even while saying that, and all the while designing things that fly successfully, while being the hero of the Positivists and hating them simultaneously. Another time French Algerian Jew Derrida comes along to mention that his Frenchness, his Algerianness, and his Jewishness were all denied at once so that he was nothing for a while even while he was definitely something. A point? None, really, except that words and ideas bob along in the river of language and we cling to one or another to try to keep afloat, to make sense of nonsense. Einstein, of course thought in pictures, which is just as well since he, as Goedel and Wittgenstein, thought that ultimately the fundamental truths, not to be confused with axioms, cannot be proved but are just there.

"I've got news for you, you don't have to worry about voting for George W. Bush again."

I'm well aware of that but I won't waste my vote on whatever socialistlite the Republicans offer up.

He needs the RNC in 2007/2008 for the Presidential nomination. Don't forget the way he undercut the Presidential judicial nominations.

There should be no open hand.

I voted against him last time. But 07 will be to late for what is needed.

Is there some way to cut him lose now or must we focus on the little fish?

I'd recommend surfing to http://www.bookfinder.com to price search which bookseller has the best price.

As I say, "Salvador Dali's Dream of Venus: The Surrealist Funhouse from the 1939 World's Fair" (by Ingrid Schaffner)

has been remaindered now. List price was $60, I got mine for $20. Don't overpay if you don't have to.

It was the best new Dali book in probably a decade and the big brick and mortar stores all ignored it. I have no use for Barnes&Noble/Bookstop/Borders outside of the newsstand area and even that is a shadow of what it formerly was.

I don't know what the other book was called.

I'd recommend reading one of the books he wrote instead like "50 Secrets of Magic Craftmanship" or "Dali on Modern Art: The Cuckolds of Antiquated Modern Art"
