Mexican President Vicente Foxs tactless rerarks about African-Americans should focus the spotlight on the issue of immigration, but not the way Mr. Fox intended.
Instead of whining about the United States enforcement of immigration laws, he should look at his own side of the border. He should be asking why so many of his fellow countrymen are so desperate to flee Mexico. About 300 Mexicans die every year trying to cross the border illegally. Yet no Americans are so desperate to enter Mexico as to put their lives in jeopardy.
Perhaps Mr. Fox should focus his energies on improving opportunities in Mexico rather than shifting the blame to his northern neighbors. What has Mr. Fox done to make Mexico the kind of country where people want the stay and raise their children, rather that flee?
Over 700,000 immigrants legally enter the United States every year. They are mostly hardworking and industrious, contributing a great deal to our economy. It is disingenuous for Mr. Fox to criticize the nation which takes in more that any country on the face of the Earth.

TRUE STORY: Ten years ago I worked for a certain luxury travel co. catering to high-paying tourists visiting Russia, China, etc. Well, one day I get this call from a very angry Mexican Coca-Cola executive by the name of Vicente Fox, complaining to me that his family had not received their visas and other docs early enough....yadayada...well, the dude is an arogant sob. Small world.
