Will Pitt:
Damn
Edited on Tue May-10-05 12:24 PM by WilliamPitt
OK, for those who care to know:
a) I just walked into this mess a few minutes ago. What I am hearing is that there was a snafu with the hospital payment that is hopefully being worked out.
b) I have known Andy personally for years, been in his house, done speaking gigs with him, met his boyfriend, dined with him, drank with him. If this is a 'scam,' as has been alleged, it is the most masterful Keyser Soze-esqe one I have ever heard of. Apply Occam's Razor.
c) About two dozen DUers would also have to have been in on it, myself included, including those who have been with Andy these last several days, those negotiating with the hospital, and those dealing with PayPal. Again, the Razor.
Andy, if you have scammed us, I am on the first plane to Seattle to make goddam sure you *will* need to see a doctor.
Skinner, can you PM me when you get the chance?
And the DUmmies were STILL trying to rationalize it. "That's not Andy's doctor." "They can't tell you anything because of privacy laws." And the vitriol they spat at Johns Hopkins because of the highly improbable checks-are-lost-in-the-mailroom canard...
I tell you, these DUmmies have NO "smell test" gene whatsoever. The whole Undie's-dying-of-cancer-unless-you-send-some-$$$-thru-PayPal scheme is such an OBVIOUS scam to anyone with half a brain...
Oh, well, that explains it.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A GOOD E-MAIL ADDRESS FOR BEV HARRIS?
I would like to get her comments, if she has any.
LOL!!! How DO these people function in reality??? Talk about your self-indulging fantasies...
Methinks Andy's gonna get some jailtime for this. $50k of fraud's gonna get him what, 1-3 years?
"Hello, Karl? Yeah, it's me, Andy. Yes, And-- yes, Andy Stephenson. Right. 'Doughboy.' Yes. Well, I just wanted to give you an update on Scamgate. It's going really well. I milked the DUpes for $50,000 and now I'm pretending that the hospital lost the money. And they're actually DEFENDING me over there! I mean, after the Bev Harris scam, I thought they'd learned their lesson, but they're just as gullible as ever! I mean it's-- What? You have a call on the other line? From Hillary? OK, I'll let you go Karl, I just wante-- Hello? Hello? Master Karl? Hello?"
This is just too funny. Reminds of when little boys hold a magnifying glass between the sun and ants and they fry. I really hope the DUmmy did scam the rest of them and he gets away with it. Could provide much humor for weeks to come.
Try this one, I don't know if it's still good:
Bevharriscontact@aol.com
Frank - Please keep me informed on the "As John Hopkins Turns" soap opera. This is just too rich. I'm thinking about running a "fuzzy puppy scam" on the DU myself (seems to be pretty easy). Just think - These morons want to run the country!

Skinner's latest update.. Wow.
Here's something for the DUmmies to read and see how well their money MAY be spent:
Results of extensive surgery for pancreatic carcinoma.
Nagakawa T, Nagamori M, Futakami F, Tsukioka Y, Kayahara M, Ohta T, Ueno K, Miyazaki I
Second Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, Kanazawa University, Japan.
BACKGROUND: Since 1973, 210 patients with pancreatic carcinoma have undergone surgery in our clinic, including 144 with carcinoma of the head of the pancreas. Of these 144 patients, macroscopic curative resections were performed on 53 (36.8%). Five patients (9.4%) died within 30 postoperative days, and an additional 3 (5.7%) died within 60 days. The overall median survival was 13 months. Eight of the patients who underwent macroscopic curative resection survived 5 years, giving a 5-year survival rate of 27.4% using the Kaplan-Meier method. The 5-year survival rate was 39.7% after a microscopically curative resection and 0% after a microscopically noncurative resection. METHODS: Outcome was compared based on the extent of pancreatic cancer by constructing survival curves according to the general rules published by the Japan Pancreas Society. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in survival based on tumor size or stage. However, there was a significant difference in the survival of patients with the absence (so) or presence (se) of invasion to the anterior capsule of the pancreas, the absence (rpo) or presence (rpe) of invasion of the retroperitoneal tissue, the absence (ew0) or presence (ew2) of invasion at the surgical margin of resection, and the extent (n0 to n2) of lymph node metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that extended radical pancreatectomy may be indicated for patients with pancreatic carcinoma because standard dissection may fail when the tumor has spread to the retroperitoneum or extrapancreatic nerve plexus.
Excerpts:
Skinner says:
Allow me to be clear: I have my own opinion about whether this is legit or a hoax, but it is only that: an opinion. I do not know the truth.
A group of people just raised a huge amount of money -- twice as much money in two weekends than DU itself raises during any of its week-long quarterly fund-drives. And they didn't even have to provide any proof whatsoever. (Again, let me repeat: This is not a statement on the legitimacy of Andy Stephenson's situation. I'm just trying to be honest about the issues involved.)
When the goal for the fund drive suddenly changed from $25,000 to $50,000, we started to get concerned. Last week I called Johns Hopkins Hospital to try to verify that Andy Stephenson is actually getting surgery. Every person I talked to gave me the same answer: Federal privacy laws forbid them from disclosing the names of patients. I want to be clear: My actions are not a reflection on Andy or any other members of this website. I was hoping to quietly verify Andy's story myself, and nobody would be the wiser.
Snip
Yesterday, as part of my search, I was directed to an individual at Johns Hopkins with the job title of "patient representative". We have been playing phone tag since then, so we haven't talked yet. Given the previous responses, I am pretty doubtful that she can help us out.
Snip
Andy Stephenson and I need to talk this out on the telephone. He needs to somehow release Johns Hopkins Hospital from their privacy restrictions so they can talk to me directly and verify that the surgery is taking place, and verify that it does cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $50,000.
Looks like Skinner is doing a CYA. It's not his fault if this is a scam according to him. I love to watch them scurrying around.
If he wrote this to reassure anyone, he failed. It only serves to generate more questions. Wonder if he'll allow any comments.
Gee, frank, this is the second time in the last few days this has happened. Maybe God is trying to tell you something. ;-)
If Andy is indeed a patient, I don't understand why finding him is so difficult. My aunt was in the hospital last week, and all I did was call "patient information" and ask to be connected to her room. They immediately connected me, without claiming that federal privacy prevented them from doing so.
I don't know whether to laugh or not, but looking over their board, I've been saying for awhile, its a pretty ripe market for a con.
I thought though they'd be scammed over politics (i.e. a book showing the software used to run dibold or some secret bush conspiracy book).
I acknowledged that they are mentally ill, but I guess somone looked them over, saw green in their eyes and found an easy way to make a whole lotta bucks.
In a way I do feel a little sorry for them, not because of their politics, but because people like them, are going to be marks for the rest of their lives and untill they get help, will have problems functioning in society.
Lala throws in the towel! Invokes "Bev" conspiracy accusation! Apparently Skins deleted her exculpatory post.

40. You would know the truth if someone would not have deleted the post i just wrote after spending a good 45 min. on the phone with JH and that office...
I quit... this is unacceptable, frankly. i know you are stressed, but i gave you facts... why would you delete them???????
you will believe rumors over Andy? well, why don't you humiliate him further and call him... I can give you the number and ask him for permission to call the hospital yourself... i had that lovely task of having to tell him why i needed to speak to the hospital...and you deleted that information?
you people, yes all of you, should be in arms that there is doubt, but even if there is doubt, i gave you facts and those facts were deleted... guess Bev did a good job.
i quit and I hope you guys can get yourselves together enough to issue a public apology to andy...
Why doesn't DUmmy Andy just get on a computer, where he is supposedly staying with some of his DUmmy friends in Baltimore, and speak out. He could calm all the Dummy's fears and make them all feel bad at the same time. Personally, I hope it is a scam, they deserve it.
