Questions Concerning the Satellite Images of Sgrena Car

Original story:

I have an unconfirmed story that CBS is reporting an American satellite recorded video that shows the car carrying Giulliana travelling at over 60 mph! If this proves to be true her entire story falls apart.

Update: It's confirmed, Pentagon sources maintain that the distance the car travelled (91 meters)and the time it took (3 sec.) means the vehicle WAS travelling at a speed greater than 60mph.

So, as we suspected Giuliana Sgrena is a communist agenda driven hyper pacifist lying POS.

Update II: It appears from the animation video that the approaching Sgrena car WAS warned with flashing lights and warning fire.

This site reported Thursday that the Pentagon had satellite images showing the Sgrena auto travelling at over 60mph at it approached the checkpoint. The full story was produced by CBS news Thursday evening using animation rather than the actual satellite video which remains under Pentagon control.

Some fellow bloggers have voiced skepticism (not the least of which, Jawa Report) concerning the validity of said report. I have therefor endeavored to research this starting first with the probability that a satellite would have recorded this event and then the premise that a military satellite would be capable of determining distance and speed.

I am looking for help from the astute minds of FR to help me in this endeavor. Please give me your ideas and opinions, especially anyone who is knowledgable in satellite technology or military image collection and interpretation.

Well, I do not know the capabilities of our satellites... however, the road which they were on is the one that goes to BIAP... probably the most dangerous road in the world right now... and according to the report:

... a US official had just passed through, so if there was going to be a satellite on that location, it would have been as good a time as any.

Negroponte?

I wouldn't discount the possibility that the imagery came from another source we don't wish to reveal and that the photos are being attributed to satellite surveillance to keep things simpler.

The point about a US dignitary having recently passed through is certainly another valid explanation.

I roam around all over the North Florida backwoods, on an electric mountain bike, with a sack of cameras, and a GPS.
When I get home, I hook the GPS to this computer, and it downloads every detail of My trip, in the form of a track, overlaid on either a photo or topo map. I can scroll over the track, and get readouts of the speed I was running at any point, and the time I was there. It is so accurate it is amazing. I have no doubt that the military has carried the technology much further than the primitive stuff I have, and I do not doubt that it is possible to track the car and measure the speed. My software also allows Me to measure distances, all You'd need is two points on a map, and the time difference involved. The GPS concept depends on very accurate atomic clocks, figuring speed would be a snap.
You don't need a GPS to play with the software. Do a google on USAPHOTOMAPS, install it {freeware}, type in Your address, or any other, and have a ball.

Just relying on CBS unfortunately...and that's a bit scary. They relied on Pentagon sources who retained possession of the satellite video.

"the car travelled (91 meters)and the time it took (3 sec.) means the vehicle WAS travelling at a speed greater than 60mph."

Was this calculated by bored math students or NASA?

NASA not too long ago crashed a probe into Mars due to English/Metric conflics.

Who in their right mind would measure one parameter in Metric units for a solution in English units?

Any local traffic court would throw out this speeding ticket.
