His presidential aspirations are getting in the way of supporting this president.

Absolutely.

I don't know what was or wasn't said between he and Lugar prior to his statement. I presume you do, based on your comment...

Even if that presumption is correct, if seems a bit crazy to me to run ads against the guy NOT because he voted against the guy, but because he didn't vote for him TODAY. Nope, he wasn't in the hearings. Until I hear otherwise, I'll presume he had a reason for that. But the downright glee with which people express the need to crucify anyone who doesn't do exactly what they are expected to do exactly when they are expected to do it is disturbing to me. Frankly, I like my government messy and inefficient. It is the best protection we have from them.

With the Democrats looking like idiots in the complaining that Bolton wasn't nice to people (as if all of those crooks and deadbeats at the UN deserve niceties), Voinovich falls right in line with them.

What gives? He doesn't show up for the hearings, and then thinks the Democrats are on to something? Is he another senile one or something?

The name Jim Inhofe comes to mind! That man is not afraid of anyone. Wish he was Majority Leader!

>>The Republicans need a pit bull for Senate Majority Leader.

As someone said on the other thread, we are seeing here the value of a Tom DeLay.

Voinovich is a jerk but then I have always thought he was a jerk. Only thing I grant him is that he is better than Glenn/Metzenbaum duo that used to respresent Ohio. That said -- never did like him and never trusted him to vote with Republicans.

Precisely why they are going after him.
If Hutchison leaves her senate seat, Tom would be a good
choice for her replacement.

Hopefully this ad will have more impact than the last one from Club for Growth, which compared Voinovich to the French. The media in Ohio got behind Voinovich and the ad was not effective in the end.
Voinovich is probably in his last term. He won re-election last year by winning all 88 counties. Yet at every Bush-Cheney '04 event I was at, Senator Voinovich was nowhere to be found. Senator DeWine was there and he was not up for re-election. Representatives Chabot, Portman, Turner, Oxley, Gillmor, Hobson, Boehner, Tiberi, LaTourette, Pryce, Regula, and Ney were at Bush-Cheney '04 events around the state. Bob Taft was at one event (the last one because he was booed out of the arena). Ken Blackwell, Jim Petro, Betty Montgomery, Joe Deters, and Jennette Bradley were at events. Yet, George Voinovich was nowhere to be found.
When Bush or Cheney were in other states, the candidates up for re-election wanted to be with them. For some reason, George Voinovich stayed away from President Bush last year.

I never felt comfortable with Frist from the beginning. For some reason, I always thought Mitch McConnell was the better choice for Majority Leader after the whole Trent Lott thing.

FNC... [Rich Lowry ] ...just reported that Chafee says Bolton's GOP support is eroding. And that Lugar says he was (not surprisingly) blindsided by Voinovich... http://www.nationalreview.com/thecorner/corner.asp

Ummm, with all due respect in how I convey this - GET REAL!

In case you haven't noticed, the Bolton hearings haven't exactly been secret... only one of the most talked about stories in Washington D.C.

Senator Voinovich decided to play into the Democrat's hands today for inexplicable reasons.

And how about this:

Rich Lowry in National Review's 'The Corner' seems to be intimating that Bolton is toast and that it was the Powell/Armitage loyalists still in the State Dept. that burned him.

My email to Voinovich through his web site:

Congratulations on your vote on President Bush's nominee to be ambassador to the UN, Mr. Bolton.

I will now contribute to any opponent you have in your next primary and will even go so far as to contribute to your Democrat opponent if you get the nomination. After all, it's better to have an honest Democrat, like the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan or my own state's Harold Ford Jr., than a dishonest RINO.

Your loyalty is now clearly more to Kofi Annan than George Bush, the UN instead of the US and the liberal elites instead of the people of America. I hope you enjoy the cocktail parties you will now be invited to. Drink hearty

It's going to be all Clinton leftovers that are going to burn him. If this fails I hope the President just leaves the post empty!
