Paraphrasing GWB talking about Faith Based Initiatives.

Procedures are not more important than outcomes - the Salvation Army gets the job done - govt agencies talk about getting the job done.

The system/procedures are not all important - results are.

Au contraire, when we're talking about the gummint, procedure is all-important. Would you want a commissar-type, omnipotent expert in, let's say, labor relations, appointed by a federal bureaucrat making life-and-death decisions about your family? With no appeal to a court? And in secret?

We are a government of laws, made by men -- which means they are imperfect -- and not, fortunately, a government where "needs" dictate what is to be done.

The constraints of our Constitution need to be adhered to, whether or not injustices are perceived to be happening as a result of some state or local official's malfeasance. If they aren't virtually everything becomes a federal issue.

That's a prescription for national euthanasia.
