Um. Correct me if I'm wrong but, these machines aren't hooked to the internet nor one to another. Right? How would they be hacked?

What a moron! The optical scan machines are the most reliable, with something like .13% error rate (compared to 7% for punchcard and 1% for touchscreen). Additionally, the optical scan has the paper trail the tin-foil-hat brigade is always harping about.
