I am trying to figure out what "lyptus wood" is, and why a DUmmie (obviously a newbie) would use it.

I do believe he may mean eucalyptus. IIRC, it is very high in terpenes. This would create irritating, if not toxic, aerosols/dust if sanded or planed.
I imagine he is somewhere (CA or FL) where there is a lot of it, it is considered a trash tree and he sees opportunity to turn free stuff into something he could sell as art/craft.
