PERSPECTIVES: RISING CO2 LEVELS - THE REASON WHY ~~The earth has a cycle

Listen up. This is very important.

The global warming fanatics have fingered rising levels of atmospheric Carbon Dioxide (CO2) - a so-called greenhouse gas alleged to be in the process of shoving the planet in a global microwave and raising sea levels to the point where the world's coastal regions will be submerged.

They blame the rise of  CO2, now about 370 parts per million and rapidly climbing, on us evil humans for using fossil fuels, driving SUVs and barbecuing frankfurters on our backyard grills.   They ignore the proven fact that over millions of years, every time CO2 levels have risen above 200 parts per million, an ice age has occurred. And in past ice ages, we weren't around to cause the levels to rise. Mother Nature did it on her own, and she doesn't drive an SUV.

Some  19,000 of the world's scientists and experts on climatology have signed declarations saying that rising CO2 levels are mankind's fault  is garbage - junk science at its worst, and insist that all the available evidence proves their contention.

In fact, the global warmiacs couldn't be further from the truth. As I argued in my January 12 column last month and in my 1997 investigative report, Global Warming or Globaloney, high levels of COin the atmosphere are indeed a dire warning that something very unpleasant is about to befall our planet and those of us who reside here, but it has nothing to do with global warming but precisely the opposite - it is both the harbinger and the cause of coming  new ice age.

Now comes Robert W. Felix who in his book Not by Fire But By Ice - the Next Ice Age Now argues persuasively that it is not global warming but ocean warming that has kicked up the levels of carbon dioxide.

It's not global warming, he writes, it's ocean warming that is pushing CO2 levels through the roof. Moreover, those skyrocketing levels of CO2, are bringing on a new ice age which is sitting at our front door right now.

Here's how he puts it: "On a related subject, let me ask you. If today's rising carbon dioxide are caused by humans, then what caused the dramatic rise in CO2 levels at the dinosaur extinction?

"Research shows that there was 'a sudden and dramatic rise' in carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere at the dinosaur extinction of 65 million years ago ... today's rise in CO2 levels can be attributed to our warming oceans. After all, the oceans are known as a carbon dioxide "sink," especially when tthe water is cold.

"But as the water warms up, it releases CO2 into the atmosphere. This happens in much the same way that a warm bottle of home-brewed root beer will release CO2. And if you give that CO2 no way to escape, the bottle will explode. We've got it backwards. We've got cause and effect in reverse. The CO2 is not causing global warming. Instead, our warming oceans are releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. It's not global warming, it's ocean warming, and it's leading us into an ice age."

According to Felix, the oceans are warming as the result of widespread underwater volcanic activity which he thoroughly documents is happening. He adds that "We’ve forgotten that this isn’t the first time our seas have warmed. Sea temperatures also shot upward 10º to 18ºF just prior to the last ice age. As the oceans warmed, evaporation increased. The excess moisture then fell to the ground as giant blizzards, giant storms and floods (Noah's Deluge type floods), and a new ice age began."

And he warns, "The same thing is happening today. Underwater volcanic activity in the Arctic Ocean far stronger than anyone ever imagined!

"German-American researchers have discovered more hydrothermal activity at the Gakkel Ridge in the Arctic Ocean than anyone ever imagined.

"The Gakkel ridge is a gigantic volcanic mountain chain stretching beneath the Arctic Ocean. With its deep valleys 5,500 meters beneath the sea surface and its 5,000 meter- high summits, Gakkel ridge is far mightier than the Alps."

"Two research icebreakers, the 'USCGC Healy' from USA and the German 'PFS Polarstern,' recently joined forces in the international expedition AMORE (Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge Expedition). In attendance were scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and other international institutions.

"The scientists had expected that the Gakkel ridge would exhibit "anemic" magnetism. Instead, they found "surprisingly strong magmatic activity in the West and the East of the ridge and one of the strongest hydrothermal activities ever seen at mid-ocean ridges."

"The Gakkel ridge extends about 1800 kilometers beneath the Arctic Ocean from north of Greenland to Siberia, and is the northernmost portion of the mid-ocean ridge system."

"To their surprise, the researchers found high levels of volcanic activity. Indeed, magmatism [extremely hot magma flowing fron eruptions] was "dramatically" higher than expected.

"Hydrothermal hot springs on the seafloor were also far more abundant than predicted.

"We expected this to be a hydrothermally dead ridge, and almost every time our water measurement instrument came up, they showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, and once we even 'saw' an active hot spring on the sea floor," said Dr. Jonathan Snow, the leader of the research group from Munich's Max Planck Institute in a 2003 press release.

Researchers found "Naturally occurring bubbles of liquid carbon dioxide were observed rising from the ocean floor, according to the Associated Press. "For the first time ever, scientists using a camera-equipped submarine have been able to witness an undersea volcano during an eruptive episode.

"Exploring the ocean floor in an area known as the Mariana Trench, last year researchers found bubbles of liquid carbon dioxide being released into the sea, enlarging up to a thousand times and turning to gas as they drifted upward."

El Niño is related to ocean warming "Ice ages looked like El Niño" according to the July 12, 2002 issue of Nature. "During past ice ages," the article says, "the tropical Pacific Ocean behaved rather as it does today in an El Niño event ...Shifts between warm and cool global average temperatures look like super El Niños."

Our seas, heated by underwater volcanism, are leading us directly into the next ice age . . . and we don’t even know it.

"That's what El Niño is all about. Warmer seas send excess moisture into the sky, leading to increased precipitation.

"Worldwide flood activity is the worst since before Christopher Columbus. In Poland, it's the worst in several thousand years. In the U.S., precipitation has increased by more than 20 percent just since 1970. This is no coincidence.

"When that precipitation begins falling in the winter, you have the makings of an ice age."

The book is an easy read, even though it is crammed full of technical detail which he manages to explain even to scientific dunderheads like me. He goes into great detail, for example in explaining why a reversal of the earth's magnetic field helps cause ice ages, as it has in all past ice age onsets, and points out that all previous magnetic reversals were preceded by declining geomagnetic field intensity which is  falling.

"During the past 2,000 years geomagnetic field intensity has plummeted more than 50 percent. Five percent of that decrease occurred in the past 100 years "- a sign he writes,  experts warn may be a precursor to a new reversal attempt.

Felix emphasizes that the record proves that we are on on the verge of the onset of a new ice age. "Ice ages begin and end abruptly every 11,500 years. First comes an enormous flood, a Noah's Deluge type of flood, which ends the previous ice age. The comes a period of warmth similar to today's ... which lasts about 11,500 years. Then the next ice age begins - catastrophically.

"That 11,500 year cycle of warmth followed by an ice age has returned like clockwork for millions of years. To hope it won't happen again just because humans now inhabit this planet would be wishful thinking."

On his website www.iceagenow.com Felix tracks the number of incidents building up to the onset of an ice age including charting current   underwater volcanic eruptions heating the oceans,  rainfall (think California), temperature, and earthquake records now being broken.

He emphasizes over and over again that the onset of an ice age is both sudden and violent, lasting about 20 years and anyone paying attention to what is happening to our planet will understated that we are probably somewhere in that 20-year period now. When it ends, huge numbers of us will go extinct, just as did the dinosaurs, and as rapidly and as violently.

Let me recap: Felix has demonstrated convincingly that rising levels of CO2 are the result of ocean warming, not because of human activities, and that high levels of CO2 cause vastly increased precipitation which results in vastly increased snowfall in moderate temperature zones and in the polar regions which in turn brings on ice ages.

In short, he has told us the reason why CO2

levels have gone through the roof, what caused those levels to increase and what the result will be.

Anyone who reads this blockbuster of a book and pays attention to his regularly updated website will understand just what we face, and will come away with a feeling of absolute contempt for those politically inspired global warming advocates who are lulling many of our fellow human beings into dangerous complacency.

The threat is here; the threat is now.

Let me close with something I wrote last month:

"If the current geological holocaust now underway is the result of a natural cycle - in this case as I argue in my study another needed regeneration of the planet, it's not an act of God but an act of nature. Sure God - the author of nature could put a stop to it, but it could well be that He wants us to sit up and take notice - to use the disasters to warn us to straighten up and fly right while there's still time - bad times are a'commin and we had better be ready spiritually.

"We're on notice. Christ told us that those with eyes better see, and those with ears better hear. We had better keep our eyes and ears open. Time's a'wastin."

I have it,but it fails to interface properly with my touch pad. It makes it too hard to compose. I cannot get it to work, even with all the optional downloads.

I can adjust font sizes on Explorer as well. I have them set so that I can use the small screen, so it is reduced in size a bit to get more on the page.

As to security, I really find little difference between the two. My popup controller works fine and I have had no intrusions that got past my other security.

BTW, I tested security last night, and was found to be good. I am essentially invisible, but have some ports that returned responses yet could not be breached. This is due to my home network. I can cut back on the numbers of ports however, and plan to do so. There are only about twelve.

I can cut that to less than six.

No hole at the Pole October 17, 2001

********************************************************

A major collaborative expedition to the waters of the North Pole has brought new insights into the structure of the Gakkel Ridge, and shown that rumours of the North Polar Ice Cap's death have been grossly exaggerated

The polar research vessels RV Polarstern and USCGC Healy returned after a ten week successful expedition to the high arctic regions.

Together with the new US Coast Guard icebreaker, the USCGC Healy, the Polarstern, run by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Sea Research (AWI) explored the Gakkel Ridge, the most northerly extension of the Mid-Atlantic submarine mountain chain during a combined AMORE-expedition (Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge Expedition). Both ships managed to reach the North Pole - exactly 10 years after RV Polarstern and the Swedish icebreaker Oden had steamed to this magic location.

For the first time an important part of the geologically active Gakkel Ridge has been mapped and sampled – and with the highest precision, according to Jörn Thiede, director of AWI,  and chief-scientist on the expedition.

The 1800km long Gakkel Ridge represents the most northerly extension of a 60,000 km long globe-encircling submarine volcanic mountain chain named the Mid Ocean Ridge System. Through the central fissures of the Mid Ocean Ridges magma forms in the earth's mantle and extrudes on to the sea floor, thus forming new oceanic crust.

The Ridge systems represent the borders of about a dozen of  plates, making up the entire Earth's crust, which resembles the seamed surface of a soccer ball. Spreading rates of the diverging plate boundaries can be as much as 10 to 20cm per year, (East Pacific Ridge), though much lower rates are known.

The Gakkel Ridge, situated in the central part of the eastern north Polar Sea forms the most northerly boundary between Eurasia and North America. At the same time it represents the ridge segment with the lowest known spreading rates – less than 1cm per year on the average. The northern Atlantic ocean and the eastern Arctic ocean formed in early Tertiary period, i.e., during the last 55 Ma or so. These two oceans and the Northern boundaries of Europe are therefore geologically young, explains Jörn Thiede, a specialist in palaeoceanography.

For the first time, as a result of this expedition, ocean geologists now have precise maps of the Gakkel Ridge.  “During the AMORE cruise the western part of the Gakkel Ridge has been mapped, measured and sampled precisely by both the Healy and the Polarstern in a combined effort. We now have a clear picture of this submarine mountain chain, which has for a long time been nameless and mysterious: below a deceptive, drifting Arctic sea-ice cover, a mountain chain is hidden which in places rises thousands of meters over the neighbouring deep sea basins. The crest is divided by an elongated, narrow and not continuous rift valley, where dramatic volcanic processes recently occurred.” says Thiede.

The region has not wanted for attention.  In 1999, during the SCICEX-program (Scientific Ice Experiment), US nuclear submarines were used to do research under the Arctic sea-ice and studied the Gakkel Ridge using Side-Scan Sonar, discovering - in the centre of the Gakkel Ridge, at 85° East -  evidence of submarine volcanic eruptions.

The Gakkel Ridge is the ideal place to test present models of global sea floor spreading on ultra slow ridges, says Dr. Wilfried Jokat (AWI). “A preliminary evaluation of seismic data shows pronounced variations in crustal thickness along the Gakkel Ridge. The crustal thickness values do not reflect any model predictions, varying between two and six kilometres. Apparently in a few places mantle rocks are displayed within the rift valley and are altered exclusively by penetrating seawater and resulting hydrothermal convection cells.”

Also spectacular are the seismic profiles through the bordering deep-sea basins. They allow, for the first time, a clear estimation of the variations in thickness of the oceanic basement, which is covered by kilometre-thick sediments. Following precise bathymetric measurements the Polarstern and the Healy have revealed the existence of complex volcanic cones in many areas of the Gakkel Ridge.

These measurements also clearly demonstrate, says Jokat, that the central Gakkel Ridge rift valley is deeper than any other mid-ocean ridge valley known on Earth. “This is clearly controlled by its slow spreading rate. Furthermore, it appears that an unexpectedly high number of volcanoes can be seen in the rift valley. These phenomena are revealed by the high quality of our bathymetric maps, which allow a surprising view of the structure of this ridge and thus clearly constitute one of the most spectacular results of our journey.”

The work of rock sampling and sediment coring in the vicinity of the Gakkel Ridge was truly "done by hand". Sampling rocks was done by dredging or with the help of a giant TV-controlled grab. Sediments were recovered using a gravity and kasten corer. The results of the sampling campaign were excellent, and helped to throw considerable light upon the origin and nature of the Gakkel Ridge. Some scientists had predicted that the Ridge had expected to sample mainly peridotites - rocks from the Earth’s mantle – emplaced on the sea floor by tectonic processes.  “However, instead of peridotites the samples brought up mainly basalts, which struck me absolutely by surprise” says Dr. Jonathan Snow of MPI Mainz.

Sediment cores recovered from close to the Siberian shelf also give new insights into glacial history. It now appears that the glacial maximum in Northern Siberia happened some ten thousand years before the maximum observed in Scandinavia and the Alps, (which took place before 20,000 years) explains Dr. Robert Spielhagen from GEOMAR Research Centre in Kiel, Germany. “We intend, with our investigations on the sediment cores, to date the arrival of the glacial maximum on the Arctic Ocean and show that the resulting melting waters influenced oceanic circulation and the world's climate.”

Another discovery of the expedition was that the Central North Polar Sea is indeed permanently covered by sea ice. Last year, however, news focused public attention on a giant open water pit that opened at the North Pole – trumpeted (wrongly) as an impressive proof of the effects of global warming. AWI specialists believe that such open water pits, called polynia, exist every summer in great numbers within the sea ice cover, and are nothing unusual.

Therefore one of the goals of this expedition was the observation of variations in sea ice thickness and distribution in the Arctic Ocean, and to compare this to data from 1991 and 1998. “The ice is back. We saw normal conditions this summer on the North Pole, kilometre-wide large ice flows with numerous small and larger polynias in between. The ice was already covered by fresh snow and on the water new ice was forming relatively early compared to previous seasons. The sea ice thickness however, was less than our previous measurements, 2m compared to 2.5m in 1991” according to Dr. Christian Haas from the AWI, head of the ice researcher group.

Antarctic cycles could aid warming prediction October 18, 2001

*****************************************************

New research, extending our knowledge of climatic cycles into the early Neogene, could aid predictions in 21st century climate systems

Research by Professor Jaap van der Meer, of Queen Mary, University of London's Geography department, and colleagues, could lead to more accurate predictions on the future of climate change.

The Cape Roberts Project, initiated in 1997 and whose research is published today (18 October) in Nature, was a major international research scheme involving thirty-three scientists from all over the world .  The scientists examined clues to Antarctica's history hidden in the sediments from the sea-bed at Cape Roberts, off the coast of Victoria Land (Antarctica), in an attempt to extend our knowledge of climatic cyclicity back many millions of years.

Between 15 and 34Ma ago when the temperature on earth was 3-4ºC hotter than today and atmospheric CO2 concentrations were twice as high as they are now, the Antarctic ice sheet varied considerably in size. The Cape Roberts Project researchers have been able to show that between 24.1 and 23.7 Ma ago (the base of the Neogene), the massive East Antarctic ice sheet expanded and contracted regularly relative to the variances in the Earth's orbit around the Sun, producing changes in sea level of up to 60m.

The new research focused on sediment data from rock cores from the seabed of Western Ross Sea, drilled between 1997 and 1999. Using this material, researchers were able to calibrate the inferred changes in ice volume with direct evidence for oscillations of the Antarctic ice sheet.

Professor van der Meer said: "We have always assumed that the Antarctic ice sheet oscillated, now we know that it did and at what frequency. This provides a much better tool for predicting its future behaviour".

We cannot let entire populations perish. It is our responsibility to not allow this. So what do to prepare? According to this, the answer is not to stop buring oil, but at least to prepare for the coming changes.

Designing systems that motivate adaptive response while accounting for risks is a good start.

Nice advertisement for someone's book. Are you a friend of his?

Here's a clue... Before you can have an ice age, you need to evaporate a lot of sea water. A whole lot.

We haven't even started.

This is important stuff, but I apologize for bothering you again, but I do have some pictures from here:

The Antarctic Ice Sheet is Growing Thicker

Not by Fire but by Ice

THE NEXT ICE AGE - NOW!

The Antarctic Ice Sheet is Growing Thicker

These two photos, taken in the late 1980s, show that the Antarctic Ice Sheet is growing thicker.

Construction Crane Buried in Ice Sheet

  • In the mid 1960s, ITT built a power transmission line in Antarctica. The transmission towers stood 115 feet tall.
  • As you can see in these photos, all but the top 30 feet of the towers are now buried in ice.
  • And the crane used to build the towers will soon be totally covered by ice. (By the way. If you know what kind of crane this is, or how tall it is, please let me know.)
  • Not only are the power transmission towers being buried, so are the Antarctic research stations themselves.
  • The old Byrd Station has been shut down because it is buried beneath 40 to 50 feet of ice and snow. It is slowly being crushed.
  • The old South Pole station is also buried beneath the ice.
  • So is the old Siple station.
  • The current South Pole station is also slowly being buried. A new station is now being built on top of the ice to replace it.
This info comes from Robert Holmes. Mr Holmes travels to Antarctica yearly, where he builds and maintains research stations. His web address is http://theice.org

  • The Antarctic Ice Sheet covers five million square miles. The Greenland Ice Sheet covers another 700,000 square miles. Combined, they're twice as big as the contiguous United States. Combined, they're 100 times bigger than all the rest of the world's glaciers put together.
  • Glaciers are growing in other areas, too. Some glaciers on Canada's Baffin Island are as large or larger than at any time during the past 33,000 years; perhaps the past 60,000 years.
  • In fact, glaciers are growing around the world.
    See list of expanding glaciers.
  • The next ice age has begun . . . and we don't even know it.

If you or someone you know has seen these towers - or actually worked on them - I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks for the ping. Ice core data show that CO2 levels have risen *after* glaciation ended and the world warmed, lagging by hundreds of years, IOW, the CO2 rose as a byproduct of warming, not the other way.
