File this under rumor, the kind of which has the ring of truth to it. From the Shape of Days blog:
February 09, 2005
One for the rumor mill: 44
I wish I could remember where I heard this. I've been meaning to post it for a couple of weeks, and in the intervening time I've completely forgotten who told me about it. So file this one under rumors-comma-amusing.
Everybody knows that the President refers to his father affectionately as "41," right? After the fact that George H.W. Bush was the 41st President of the United States. Bill Clinton was #42, and George W. Bush is #43.
The rumor goes that ever since the election, the President has been jokingly referring to Secretary of State Condi Rice as "44."
Part of me really wants Condi to get the nomination in '08 because I think she'd be a fantastic President but part of me wants her to get the nomination just so we can finally put that "the GOP is a white-men-only club" nonsense to bed once and for all.
I ran across this in the blogosphere last night, and it seemed to have the ring of truth to it, as Bush is the kind of guy who not only jokes that way, but probably thinks that way, as well. Would not at all be surprised if it's true.
Just thought I'd pass it along.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
I like this kind of stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if this story has a bit of truth....sounds like something Pres. Bush would joke about. Thanks for posting it.
Not gonna happen. Hillary on the other hand, shudder, gulp, sigh, moan and run to work to try to forget it.
And wouldn't that be sweet!
I've been hoping that Cheney resigns after the '06 midterms and W nominates Condi to fill the remainder of his term. She could then run as the incumbent Veep. Sweet!
It would also put the final nail in "Hitlery's bid for president" coffin.
If we got to choose between Hitlery and Condi, I doubt it would even be close! Condi would take it in a landslide!
Condi would be the first Scorpio President since T.R. Scorpios take no prisoners and kick major butt.
I wish it could be so, yet there is no way the Republican Party would support her.
I think too many white voters would be turned off because she's black and the abortion/affirmative action wing of the Republican party would stomp her in the primaries.
She hasn't got a prayer. Look elsewhere.
Condi and Mitt Romney---Would kick ass!!!!
What a concept....I like it! You should be a strategerist for the 'publicans!
Why not?
The thought is an intriguing one and while she may not seek the nomination, couldn't she be drafted?........She certainly is better than ANYTHING the RATs could put up.
"I know..this is unsourced rumor."
So, what your saying is that is more reliable than Dan Rather. I am leaning toward believing this. Bush is known to give people nicknames and this seems to have his unique style.
Comments?
"And wouldn't that be sweet!"
MOST definitely!
Her real problem has nothing to do with the color of her skin; it has to do with her position on abortion.
Re your Cheney resignation sceanario. I had the same thought. You just might see it happen.
I think that's a bad idea. People like changing governments every decade or so. Condi MIGHT be able to pull the premise off, that she is not a continuation of this administration, if she is only a cabinet official. As a Veep, it would be impossible.
love the idea...love Condi...HOWEVER IMHO she needs to show she has the political instincts to be able run for public office, win a general election, and govern strategically at the level of a major state governor.
My money's on Condi.
She would mop the floor with Hitlery in the general election.
