Bed and Breakfast advice for Baton Rouge Area

Posted on 02/02/2005 4:19:43 PM PST by hoppity

Hey all.

My wife and I are heading to Louisiana for our tenth anniversary in August. We're flying in to Baton Rouge, and planning to hit a B&B or two, then head to New Orleans. The three that stand out to me are the Nottoway Plantation, the Cottage Plantation, and the Chretien Point Plantation. Does anyone know anything about these places? Or better places to stay?

I sure would appreciate some local knowledge, or recommendations if you've been to the area. Thanks.

It's been a long time since I've been to that part of the world, but there is not a lot to see or do around White Castle (Nottaway) other than the plantation house itself. (Of course, that may be what you are looking for.) There are several plantations around St. Francisville, so there is more to get out and see. I don't really know anything about the quality of the accomodiations at any of the places you listed.

While there are a few other plantations between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, there are far more petrochemical plants.

As for New Orleans, if you are not familiar with the area, be careful. Don't walk in any of the cemetaries unless you are on a guided tour. In the French Quarter, at night don't go any further down river than a block or so past Jackson Square, and don't go further away from the river than Dauphine, although Bourbon is a safer limit.

Thanks for the info. I am leaning toward St. Francisville.

I am very familiar with this place first hand and I cannot say enough about spending the night or a week-end in Donaldsonville. There is a balcony to drink wine on, walk to the antique stores (several) go downstairs to the antique store, John Folse's Bittersweet is one block away and you can dine at the Grapevine or several others!

Howdy,

My wife and I decided to go to Lafayette for the first couple of nights and stay here: http://www.tfreres.com

It's not as fancy, but much cheaper.

Thanks for your help and opinions.
