AdFreak: "We have gotten official word that neither VW nor any of its agencies (including DDB, its lead shop in Europe) had anything to do with this. It is indeed a hoax. "

But I don't care....I thinks it's great~!
So just who produced this offensive spot? The ad doesn't appear to be a spoof put together by some rogue amateur filmmakers, as its production values (e.g., shot on 35mm film, probably at a cost in the tens of thousands of dollars) would indicate. Paul Buckett, a Volkswagen spokesman, has denied that the automobile manufacturer had anything to do with it:Two creatives known to our advertising agency, DDB (Doyle Dane Bernbach) London, sent in this work on spec. The agency wouldn't have anything to do it. I can only assume the people who made it put it on the web.We were horrified. This is not something we would consider using: it is in incredibly bad taste to depict suicide bombers.
It gives the impression we've condoned or supported it, and is potentially very damaging to Volkswagen. Our legal department is planning an action . . .'
It's not a hoax - you would call that a spoof. A hoax is when you are actually trying to trick or deceive people. I don't believe this short "ad" was meant do do anything but be a joke - something like the old "ads" that Saturday Night Live use to produce.
The VW Ted Kennedy ad was a spoof too. It is also the only VW ad I will never forget...well, I may remember this one. :^)
I've been thinking about this for several days, and I think it was done professionally. Perhaps it was done as a joke by the agency. Obviously no one is going to admit it is serious.
Obviously VW did NOT pay for it, but it's still great!
