WINSOME BUT FIRM: In "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King", Gandalf says at one point, "things have been put in motion now that can not be stopped...". He was referring to the negative aspects of Sauron the evil eye.
Today on capitol hill it appears that Democrats have become as resigned as Gandalf. Only instead of the "end of middle earth"...they are all despairing about the Bush second term.
It is showing in how they are handling the Bush nominees. Today's victim of rage: Condaleeza Rice.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee took particular delight in hammering at the War On Terror, and in painting an even more blackened and sullied picture of America's relationship with allies.
Rice's message (as always) was clear.
"(I will) work to mend and strengthen ties with allies frayed by the war in Iraq...the time for diplomacy is now," she told senators.
Delware Sen. Joe Biden felt it necessary to bite back.
"The time for diplomacy is long overdue," retorted Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, the senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He told her the United States is "paying a heavy price" for the administration's policy in Iraq.
There has been no mention in the early reports yet today if "Brickhead" Barbara Boxer was still planning to follow through on her threat to "hold Rice accountable" for supposed wrong doing in the War On Terror.
And when it came to the War On Terror Rice allowed herself to not be misunderstood or misquoted saying the stakes could not be higher.
"As long as the broader Middle East remains a region of tyranny and despair and anger, it will produce extremists and movements that threaten the safety of Americans and our friends," she said.
I am grateful that she understands this basic fundamental and can continue to articulate it to people like Boxer and Biden who continue to parade around as though terrorism is a figment of the Bush Administration's imagination.

The Dems think they are shooting fish in a bowl. I think it's the other way around, she's doing all the shooting with deadly aim too.
Why do all these guys give half hour speeches before they get around to any questions.
It looked like Democratic Sound Bite Nite to me instead of getting on with the business of approving Dr. Rice - which
will happen in spite of all their blowhard rhetoric.
Boooooooooring.
She lived up to her reputation - bless her.
Boxer is living up to her reputation.
Gandalph wasn't being resigned, he was telling the others that it was too late to be wishing for other things and too late for denial, the war was on, like it or not and they had to destroy the enemy to survive.
Just like now.
The world war isn't hot, yet, but it is on and can not be stopped. We will have to fight or we will be destroyed.
And like the story, our enemies are legion and our allies weak to nonexistent.
Worst of all are the traitors within.
They need to show that they know at least half as much about Iraq as Dr Rice does.
Thank you. Agreed.
I really couldn't find a single question in Blowhard Boxer's dribble she spurted in front of Dr. Rice. That was utterly pathetic.
Somehow I don't think Condi's idea of diplomacy is the same the DUMS invision.
Some of them fail to demonstrate that they know half as much as Dr Rice, but they get to vote on the appointment anyway. It's the rules, but we will survive.
"B Boxer is such an ass."
that is an insult to the asses of the country.
What? Joe Biden?
Big ol' mouth so full of teeth - no bite
The Cheshire cat of the Senate
A paper, toothless tiger.
The Delaware delusion of dignity.
"Why do all these guys give half hour speeches before they get around to any questions."
To quote (at least similar) a former president: "Because I could..."
This is the chance for these weak-spined, impotent jerks to make themselves look sooooo important and sooooo necessary! If any of these 'progressives' had to undergo similar questioning, they'd break down in tears...and the MSM would absolutely crucify any conservative daring to question so harshly! I really do detest these hearings.
The intellectual divide and separation among the questioners and the answers provided by Dr. Rice were able to demonstrate they are so far out of her league, it was their good fortune that she didn't laugh in their faces at some of the dialogue.
I believe she even "diplomatically" used lesser words than she is accustomed to (like four letter ones which they understand).
And Boxer? She is an embarrassment to California - starting out as a token and never rising above it. She is still a token. She has met a women she cannot ever exchange ideas with in comfort. Way too out of reach.
