Humorous.
I didn't think it was humorous.
Schizophrenia is a very, very terrible disease. Depending on the severity of the condition, people with schizophrenia are either completely out of their rational senses or living in a state of sometime in and sometimes out of rationality. And even when feeling somewhat normal, there is a constant and great anxiety over when the next panic attack will come.
They don't go out even when they are feeling ok because of fear that a panic attack come on while they are outside. To overcome this, to go out, they will load up on medicine to help them through. But this leaves them in a doped up state.
Certainly they are not able to work of hold gainful employment. Unless well off, social security payments become their sole source of income. That's anywhere from $980 to $1,800 a month.
The most effective medicines - and there really are none that cure this disease - are very expensive, costing upwards of $1,000 a month. If they are lucky, they will be able to get coupons from a doctor or some sort of a discount on the medicine. But even with coupons or discounts, the cost is $500 a month or more.
Not being able to afford this, they settle for less effective medicines and much less able to function, fighting off more frequently the anxiety attacks.
No, I do not think it is humorous. Really, it is quite sad. And quite sad that someone would make fun of this condition. I don't think the author meant any harm by their comments. It is just ignorance on their part.
And really, since when is FR about ignorance?
