This crisis is probably more important in the continuing struggle between the east and the west than most realize. Over it all hangs the shadow of the cold war and the historical Russian domination of Eastern Europe and the other Republics in the region. Putin's continuing power grab in the Ukraine smacks of the old tricks of Empire. Rumors of Russian infiltrators in the police forces and Russian troops massing on the borders send us right back to the images and actions of past Russian crackdowns on the fragile flower that is self determination and freedom. The Bush administration and several Republican senators have bravely, and correctly, backed Viktor Yushchenko and not recognized the amazingly corrupt and fraudulent election results.
The mass displays of 'people power' and attempts to shut down the government reminds me of what happened in Poland, Romania, and the various other Eastern block countries as they broke the yoke of the Russian bear. There are serious things going on behind the scenes that we are barely able to guess at. Last night, for example, the TV coverage was absolutely saturated with the ongoing crisis in the Ukraine and then this morning... absolutely nothing for many hours. Every channel for some reason had a news blackout on the story. Nothing. Then about ten o'clock it seemed to have been lifted and suddenly it was 'breaking news' once again on every update on nearly every station. Very odd but not unheard of for our government to ask the media to downplay certain situations at critical moments. That may have happened here. A very delicate situation.
This is the first major struggle between the US and the old remnants of the Soviet Union over an entire people since the end of the cold war. The old KGB operative vs. the architect of the War on Terror. This is a pivotal decision whether the Ukraine will join the free nations of Europe and the West and escape the historical domination they have endured or whether they will once again become a puppet state and exist only under the sphere of influence of Russia. Keep your eyes on this.
Visited your blog. Informative, well done. I look forward to seeing more in the future.
Kudos to your blog.I'm really impressed with the pictures keep them coming. I was just responding to a liberal blog(yahoo news group talk tank and I sure could use some help with these crackpots!) that was comparing Hitler and Bush. It's nice to be around like minded people!
