THE UNITED WAY/MY OPINION BY Steve Newton

Well, after reading information on the Free Republic from some of my far more learned colleagues, I decided to look up information on the United Way myself. As everyone probably knows, I never express a political opinion outright. However, when I was young I worked at an establishment who REQUIRED you to sign up for the United Way BEFORE you were employed. So I have a vested interest in this discussion.

The United Way should be shunned like a pedophilic Uncle.

I like what you said about supporting their business. If we hit the liberals and their supporters in the pocket book maybe they will finally understand they and Holyweird are NOT the mainstream.

There's another thing you might want to check into, to find out if they're still doing it - the "designated contribution" trick. They supposedly let you pick one charity to get your whole contribution. As a guy in my office found out, what they don't tell you is that they deduct the amount of your contribution from the funds that charity would be allocated, based on a formula for contributions by people who don't designate a specific charity. So the charity you designate doesn't get a dollar more than they would get anyway. Nasty stuff...

For the past 10-12 years, I have made my "UW" checks payable to Sam Houston Council, Boy Scouts of America, as a direct response to the UW exclusion of the BSA, in San Francisco. Turn the check in with my UW card, with only my name on it, so I get 'credit' with management for participating. I always get a "Thank you" note from the local BSA.

So far, on one has said a thing. Better if they don't, just mentioning UW gets my blood pressure up.

.50 cents of every dollar?? Try 10cents..thats right 10 cents of every dollar does not go to the apparatus itself. They had a director out here in ca. that made 385K a year and twelve people below him made 150K. Then they pull funding of the boy scouts. If you are only now realizing that this is a leftist corrupt outfit you get your news about 7 years late.

LOL!!! Gee, thanks for the critique regarding my news gathering timeliness...

Maybe I'm trapped in a Freeper Twilight Zone - living and posting 7 years in the past.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE ANY MONEY TO THE UNITED WAY!!! I'm sorry was I yelling a little bit? let me clear that up. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE ONE PENNY TO THE UNITED WAY! I'm compiling information for a book and I will never give another penny to any charity that I am not fully informed of where that money is going.

The united way, at least last I checked was giving money to People for the ethical treatment of animals. The same peta that is funding the criminal defense of a domestic terrorist with ELF (Earth liberation front)

There is a animal rights organization in california that solicits money for their cause out of one door and runs a law office that specializes in class action lawsuits out of the other. They have also received money from the united way.

Many of these "charities are incestuous. People sitting on the board of one charity will give money to another charity having many of the same board members. One charity might sound "reasonable", but you have no choice about sponsoring the other. the board members usually get paid at both charities.

If you gave money to the victims of 9-11 there's a good chance that some of your money wound up in the pockets of a charity like handgun control inc.

You wonder how these aging actors/actresses slash activists still live the high life even after 15 years without a money making movie and no job to speak of? So do I I havn't found much of a link yet, but I will.

Good suggestion

I believe I just might start to pressure their butts. Of course I still haven't heard from my complaint to the United Nations.

I'm just compiling information right now, really don't have a "form" for the book. The difficult part is getting the names of the players. not the big names out front, like sarah brady, the players behind the scenes are the ones with all the dirty connections. They do a good job of hiding.

I may be in over my head with this project, but I'm learning as I go.

This was about 15 years ago when I worked at a hospital. Once you signed up to give your "fair share" (I think one hour's pay per pay period), then every year we received a memo that read: "we assume you wish to continue contributing your fair share...." with no place to check yes or no. You had to actually go down to Human Resources and tell them that you no longer wished to contribute. They only gave new contribution forms to employees who did not contribute or "under-contributed." Department supervisors really pushed you to contribute because they received some kind of bogus award for all of their employees giving.

I personally donate to my church and take dog and cat food to the Humane Socieity. I no longer contribute to the big-name charities.

Aside from all the scandals, The United Way is a sham organization as a charity. They throw expensive parties, events for a special group of rich or connected people (and the top brass of UW get to hob nob using other people's money), but most of the contributions come from broad type donations, not the people they party with.

Sounds like a way for company officers to get benefits (invitations to parties, events, and what-not) in exchange for arm-twisting their employees. If it were more open, it would be illegal

I agree. I have got to the point I don't give money to anyone unless I know EXACTLY who they are and what they are going to do with it. The Veterans Home or nursing homes are a good place too.

I had thought of specifying which charities I wanted my money to go to, and then I thought - Hmmm. They allocate so many dollars to a bunch of charities. All they have to do is say that my dollars are a part of that sum. That frees up dollars to go to the things that I don't like. No, they can make their disbursals to the charities I like using money from people who don't care where it goes. I can add mine directly to the pot without having a bunch siphoned away. I think of it as siphoning off the "evil dollars" to the good causes, instead of the reverse.

No sir. I give directly now. Eliminate the middle man. Eliminate the adminstrative costs.

Ok, I did lie a little. My employer puts the pressure on big time for United Way. Now I write a $50 check and get them off my back. No more payroll deductions. That "fair share" business griped me from the start, but don't get me started on that!
