CONCORD, N.H. -- Former New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith, a conservative Republican who once ran for president as an independent, is endorsing John Kerry for president.
Smith, in a letter released Thursday by the Kerry campaign, praised his former colleague as a Democrat "who crossed the aisle to forge a bipartisan coalition in the Senate to balance the federal budget."
Smith served two terms in the Senate representing New Hampshire before being defeated by John Sununu in the 2002 Republican primary. He moved to Sarasota, Fla., last year, where he was hired as a real estate specialist.
He briefly sought the Republican nomination for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida, but stopped, citing a poor start to fund-raising.
He quit the Republican Party and ran as an independent for president in 1999. He later rejoined the GOP.
Did he run for President in 2000?
When asked to respond to Mr. Kerry's statement of thanks, Bob Smith had this reply....
"My endorsement of Senator Kerry is the hinge on which the Glue of Fate will propel the Senator to Greatness. And I say this as his closest confidant! Besides, there's not a man alive who does not care what I think..."
The Freepers who supported this lunatic's run for the Oval Office or the Florida Senate should hang their heads in shame.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
;-)
Its sad to see this. I liked Smith for his stand on immigration, but clearly he is bitter about the party establishment backing Sununu over him 2 yrs ago; something they wouldn't have done had he not bolted the party in a futile Presidential run only to come back as damaged goods.
How any conservative can truly support Kerry is beyond me. The only rationale I can understand is if one things the next 4 yrs are screwed no matter who wins so its better to put up a Dem as the sacrificial lamb, with the added bonus of keeping Hillary out of the picture.
This is nothing more than payback for Bush endorsing John Sununu. I never thought Bob Smith was this vindictive!
Smith ran an entire campaign, and then left the party, based on his pro-life stance. In my mind, he is now a hypocrite of the highest order. Shame on you, Bob Smith, you have proven the Bush White House to be right about you after all. John Sununu really was the more conservative candidate after all; what fools we were to feel disappointment at your loss! I am ashamed to have felt any sadness when you lost the primary!
I am so very disappointed with you, Bob Smith, that words defy me. All of the reasons you always gave that you should be endorsed and elected, you threw out the window when it came time to show it!
This is one of the worst things I've ever heard; you gotta hand it to him, Freepers, he really had us fooled. How could we be so gullible?!?!?
I hope you plant a tree for every partial-birth abortion, Bob Smith, so that you can see what your empty words are worth with your own eyes. Then enjoy your massive forest; it will be just big enough to hide the mass graves from your eyes.
If you want to let "Longboat Bob" know how you feel about his endorsement, his email is Robert.Smith@coldwellbanker.com
BTW, Bob has still yet to get a single listing for his "thriving" real estate career
BUSH NEVER ENDORSED JOHN E. SUNUNU!!!
This lie has been spread here at FR since 2001.
For about 5 minutes I think.
Sorry!
The endorsement notice I read was for the general election, not the primaries!
Long Boat key is a mile or two from Margarita Paradise..
Jimmy ButtButts Head-quarters... know what I mean.. d;-'
i.e. Gay americas winter home, Key West..
Smith is an opportunistic moron. Period.
You'll never get it. It is better for those who were on the other side to realize now how wrong they were without rubbing salt into the wound.
The Democrats hope this is their answer to Zell Miller. Conservatives will fall on the floor laughing.
Typical loser.
What a fat, hypocritical P.O.S! Pro-life my butt. This jerk is bitter that he's been rejected by conservatives for the last few offices he's sought, now he wants the entire conservative movement to pay because of it. The man who claims he wants to end abortion now endorses a rabid pro-abortionist for President!
I'm so glad I advocated for Sununu in 2002 over this traitor, and even happier Sununu sent him packing. He probably would have lost to Shaheen, and even if he won he would have been a totally unreliable "ally" in the Senate. I hope he enjoys the private sector.
