Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, PA Materials Required: Forrest Gump soundtrack, Miniature protest signs, markers for each student Activity Time: half hour Concepts Taught: Music, History
I. OBJECTIVES 1. Students will be able to deomonstrate thier knowlege agbout protest music of the late sixties by creating miniature protest signs while listening to the song, For What its Worth, by the group, Buffalo Springfield. 2. Students will gain knowledge about the Vietnam War and means of protest for the war by listening to two antiwar songs and discussing them. II. PROCEDURES A.INTRODUCTION AND MOTIVATION The teacher will tell the students that they will be studying how some musicians incorporate messages into their lyrics. The students will listen to the song, For What its Worth, and discuss it's meaning. The teacher will tell the students that the song is a protest song for the Vietnam War and that many people protested the war with music.
B. PRICIPLE ACTIVITY 1. The teacher will go over some means of protest during this time and tell the students that music was at the forefront of the protest movement. 2. The teacher will tell the students that the song, Blowin in the Wind, by Bob Dylan became known as the anthem of the antiwar generation. The teacher will ask the students to listen to the song and find some lyrics or words that would make this a protest song for the Vietnam War.
C. CONCLUDING ACTIVITY The teacher will tell the students that they are going to pretend that they are protesters for the Vietnam War. The students will create miniature protest signs for the war. While they are making these signs they will again listen to the song, For What its Worth,and use the lyrics to give them ideas for what to include on their signs. The teacher will provide two examples. When the signs are completed, the teacher will ask a few students to share their work and then the teacher will display them all.
IV. EVALUATION The students will be assessed by their completion of the protest signs and thier involvement in the discussion.
Also notice that our esteemed college instructor either couldn't spell principle correctly, didn't know how to use spellcheck or can't proofread.
