Remarks of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton as Delivered to the National Education Association
July 6, 2004
I was just in the neighborhood. I heard there were a few of my friends over in the Convention Center. I decided Id come by and just kind of get a look at you. Youre looking really good. And you made a great decision when you decided to pledge your support and endorse John Kerry for President of the United States.
Today John Kerry made a great decision in choosing John Edwards to run with him. The Kerry Edwards ticket will restore a sense of hope and optimism to our country. It will once again send a message to every boy and girl that you belong, that youre part of this great adventure we know as America, that we care about you, that we dont consider compassion just a slogan, but a way of life. And we intend to do all we can, to reach out and lift each other up. So I am delighted to join with you to work with you between now and November.
I want to thank Reg. Reg Weaver has done a terrific job in leading the NEA. When I look at Reg Weaver, I see a dedicated human being. I see someone who cares about our children, who cares about those who teach and educate and provide support services, who fundamentally believe that public education is one of the reasons why America has been the greatest country in the history of the world.
But we know that this is going to be a tough election. There are two very different visions. Two different sets of values about what America needs, what kind of future we should be building together. So much is at stake and you understand that. From Iraq to our economy, John Kerry and John Edwards have an exciting vision for our country. And they understand theyve got to bring people together to work together. They have to set goals that all of us know will make us reach higher and higher as we set forth a goal of a better America, a more peaceful and prosperous world.
How do we get from where we are to where we need to be? Thats all of our jobs. People run for political office and they become elected officials -- and I am so deeply honored to represent the people of New York in the United States Senate. I know that we have people from every corner of our country who come with different life experiences, with different ideas about what makes for strong families, for growing economies, for good schools. But in this great hall we are joined together by a common purpose. We have to make sure that its not just those of us who are here today, but everyone we can speak to. And make sure they understand why they have to become involved in this election.
Education remains a core issue -- we know that. We have two very different ideas about what makes a good public education in this election. We know that reforms without resources can be worse than no reforms at all. I have stood and fought and voted with John Kerry and John Edwards to make sure that our schools get the resources that they were promised. We know we have an administration that talks the talk but does not walk the walk. We have an administration that wants to cut after school programs, that has decided they want to cut any funding for necessary modernization and renovation and building to decrease overcrowded classrooms. We have an administration that wants to dismantle our public school system through the use of vouchers. And we understand that the only way we can prevent that agenda from being implemented is to change the occupant in the White House in November of 2004.
While President Bushs Secretary of Education views Reg Weaver as a terrorist, John Kerry and John Edwards view him as a partner. Its not just education thats going to determine the future of our country. On issue after issue, you know what the stakes are. You see the headlines.
Whether its healthcare -- something that Ive worked on and will continue to work on until we finally get a system that provides quality, affordable healthcare for every American -- John Kerry has a real plan. Hes not just talking about it. Hes proposed how he would do it, providing moral support for those who are not only uninsured but increasingly the many, many more who are underinsured, who get turned away at the door of their HMO. John Edwards was the leader in the fight to get a patients bill of rights in the United States Congress and when they get a Kerry-Edwards administration we will finally have a patients bill of rights.
I know that its always a little bit tempting to look backwards to the good old days. But even though Im getting older I can remember back three and a half years. I can remember when we had a Democratic administration that created more than 22 million new jobs. I can remember when we were making progress on so many fronts whether it was moving in the direction of healthcare for our children, of working to lower prescription drug costs or making us less energy dependent on the Middle East, protecting our environment across the board. Its not so long ago. We dont have to look very far back to know how we can get back on the right track to the future that will make America a better place for all of us again.
Theres a reason that the majority of Americans did not vote for George W. Bush the first time around. And boy do we have more evidence about how right we were. If he were one of your students, you would be sending home notes to his mother. Dear Mrs. Bush, he never admits when hes wrong. You really have your work cut out for you.
But weve got a different alternative. We can just line up and vote him out of office in November. Its fun being here and the energy in this great hall is probably enough to keep the lights on in Washington for a week or two. But if all we do is stand up and clap and cheer and then go home and dont get involved, were going to be back here next year with the same complaints. So are you ready to go to work to elect John Kerry and John Edwards President and Vice President of the United States?
Lets all of us pledge that were going to register 5, 10, 15, 20 more voters. Were going to motivate those voters; were going to talk about whats at stake in this election. Were going to be manning those phone lines, walking those streets, putting out that literature, talking to our friends and neighbors because this is the most important election in our lifetime, this is going to set the course for America and the world. So lets go out and show everybody that we know how to win for John Kerry and John Edwards. Thank you and God bless you.
Does she remember how the billing records got on the table? Does she remember Monica giving her husband oral favors when the family was on the way to church?
I'm going to have to go back in the archives and find a good puke picture!
Is hildabeast talking about the 1990's or 1890"s?
"... back when a woman knew her @#$%ing place as a sitting President's chosen receptacle -- "voluntary" or otherwise -- and knew enough to keep her frickin' mouth shut and put some @#$%ing ICE on it afterwards, for fear that our willing media vassals would promptly have her beaten, flayed and torched, otherwise! Ahhhhhhhhh... good times... GOOD times..."
She can't remember further than that, huh? That's my problem sometimes. But imagine Kerry's distress. He's made his confabulated memories from 1968-69 the topic of every dinner conversation. Ha Ha. What a hoot.

Too bad she couldn't remember them when she testified before Congress.
