In a new ad entitled "George Bush is up to his old tricks" Kerry launches a counter attack to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads. The ad shows John McCain excoriating Bush for "standing beside' a veteran who claimed the McCain had abandoned the Vietnam Veterans.
My first impression is that the ad is a very effective response, making it look as though George Bush orchestrated the attack against McCain and is doing the same to Kerry now. However, I believe that is not the case. Standing beside someone is not attacking McCain. It sounded like a bit of political grandstanding on McCain's part that is now coming back to haunt Bush. The knee-jerk crowd will dance gleefully in place, while the smarter voter will try to look deeper and examine the facts.
In any event, launching the ad is fair enough and the outcome will be seen in the coming weeks. I score the ad an 8 out of 10 for the Democrats; it is the most effective pro-Kerry ad I have seen yet.
The attempt is to link Bush to the Swift Vet ads when in fact there is no link and Bush has disavowed them. Bush is stuck with the Swift Boat Vets for better or for worse. The veterans have made it clear that they have no intention of stopping irrespective of President Bush's wishes.
Bush and McCain now need to respond. It will be most interesting to gauge McCain's response.
McCain needs to immediately denounce the ad using him as a defacto endorser of Kerry.
Dems are playing bad...BAD!
After all the photos of the Bush/McCain bear hug, I don't think it will have the impact that it would have had if McCain were not campaigning with Bush and speaking at the RNC.
HOW I LOATH THE LEFT
If McCain is REALLY supporting Bush than he won't let his name and words be on John Kerry's ad.
Exactly, and thats my point.
I cant remember what Bush said after MCCain had said that Bush in that debate, it would be interesting to know what he replied to McCain, any freepers out there remember?
Pulling McCain into this was not a smart move
"It will be most interesting to gauge McCain's response"
What is it with McClain? Kerry's actions harmed him as a POW also. I am really starting to believe that McClain is not just a maverick, he is indeed mentally unstable. I think it would be in the GOP and the country, if McClain retired to private life.
Kerry is an opportunistic poltroon. He is a worse about "poll" watching than even Clinton. His being in office is scary.
Well we will have to see how this plays, its nothing but a typical democratic dirty trick.
Anyone who isn't a democratic activist knows the Swiftvets are against Kerry and nothing the President could say will chance that.
An ad entitled "George Bush is up to his old tricks" probably won't get any traction outside of Kerry's base, because Bush doesn't have the reputation of being a trickster. It's a bit late to try to paint him as anything but what he is -- a plain-spoken man, the straightest of straight shooters.
I wonder what "Fringe veterans group" McPain is refering to?
Yes he did .. but I can't remember exactly what he said though
I don't remember Bush ever saying McCain was dishonorable in his service
This is getting reeeeeaaaally interesting
Kerry is getting killed with the Swift Boats vets ad.
The second ad where they talked about Kerry accusing the Vietnam Vets of committing war crimes and how it was used against the POW by the Vietnamese is going to destroy him. He wanted his service in Vietnam to be the only theme for people to vote for him, now people will know how he trashed the troops when he came from Vietnam and gave aide and comfort for the enemy.
For them to ask the FEC to pull out the Swift vets Boat ads is with any doubt a sign of ultimate desperation.
Nothing can Kerry do now, that will prevent his anti-Vietnam war treasonous record from being exposed to the public in a big and utterly devastating way.
This is an internet ad, not a TV ad. But you are right in that it is an effective ad, and makes Bush look tongue-tied.
Very well Senator . . .
DID you convey those accusations before the Senate? and
WERE they re-read to our men who were POWS?
Hmmmm . . .?
Looks like a good idea for an Ad.
Oh, my! That's a fairly effective ad.
