And APOLIGIZING is going to make it better how?!

A moral man apologizes because it's the right thing to do, not for any practical gain. I think this administration is showing more character than many of its supporters.

We can either fight a war or become WIMPS! We can't even bomb Sadr on Friday because of his RELIGION! Give me a break!!!!!!!

I agree with you on this point. But I don't think Rumsfeld has much of an option but to be publicly contrite for the breakdown of leadership in that military unit. The fact is, the media buzzsaw is roaring, whether we like it or not. He has to pre-empt these calls for resignation by making a very public act of contrition. Otherwise...

Did you ever hear of the expression "screw them with a smile?" Well th is is "screw them with an apology". Just wait until the gloves come off. All of those clambering for Rumfeld's resignation are going to eat their words.

I have no problem if he apologizes as long as he fights.

Rumsfeld might apologize FOR the troops who committed the bad behavior, but he has nothing to apologize for.

"It will be ok .. hang in there"

On anther thread it has been mentioned that Kerry wants the dems to 'drop this issue' because he fears a backlash. It seems he has been burning up the phone lines begging the dem senators to go easy on Rumsfeld today. He claims this issue just keeps his own 'war crimes' on the front page. Looks like Kerry is in 'panic' mode.

Rummy is apologizing for not giving Congress a heads-up when he briefed them just the day before. I'm sure he also had to apologize to President Bush. I don't see this as wrong and I am a huge Rummy fan.

It will still drag on because the creeps in the media will see to it. Hillary Clinton will make sure of that. If we start giving in to them every time they say then we might as well hand John Kerry/Hillary Clinton the keys to the White House. I am not going to stand up for people who think giving in and trying to be nice to jerk politicians who could care less about this country is the way to get things done. IT IS NOT! They don't EVER stop trashing this country EVER for political gains. I'm SICK of it!

I agree --- it all depends on how they apologize.

Bring charges against those responsible for the abuse, but don't apologize for something you did not have direct control over.

When someone you know dies for this crap then get back to me! We either fight a war or go home. That's just what a bunch of lunatics want us to do.

Bush has made a practice of giving Democrats most of what they clamor for and invariably, Bush's magnaminity outclasses and stymies the tantrum throwing Dems.

Same thing will happen this time.

Rumsfeld will apologize, just as Bush did, but Democrats will not accept that (even though that's what they've been clamoring for). Dems will continue to rant and rave that it's not enough. They will look like sour faced 2 year olds. Kerry's starting to realize that this issue is taking ALL the attention away from him. He wants it to stop, but it's too juicy for the most rabid Dems to let go of it.

It will be okay. Wait and see.

This apologizing bs has gotten completely out of hand. Did FDR apologize for carpet bombing those German city's and Truman apologize to the Japanese for dropping the big one and killing 200,000 civilians?

I see you've been listening to Rush.

But I ask what in the world does bombing the Germans and the Japanese have to do with a US run prison camp in Iraq?

I say appoligize and get it over with something like 170 days out from the election.

Take the issue away from the Scumacrats.

What's wrong for apologizing to Congress for not keeping them informed??

I'm sure that's what the sorry will be for, not for the actions of a few immature, stupid morons in uniform who took it upon themselves to blow our efforts to win the support of the Iraqi's out of the water...and to make it worse-took pictures of it.

(sorry for the run on sentence) not enough coffee yet.)

Here's my big problem with all this. First I agree the treatment shown in the pictures is disgraceful and uncalled for.

Having said that, the piling on by the media, and the Dems (but I repeat myself) not to mention the rest of the world smacks of rank opportunism that long ago ceased being about the prisoners or the soldiers. It is the latest branch to flay the Bush administration and attempt to bring it down at any cost. In this case, the cost is our very real war on terror. If Kerry wins it will be replaced by a phony show-war and the UN will be back in business full time (at least now they're running for cover).

Yes, investigate the case, try the perps fairly, punish the guilty and then move on!

Unless Rumsfeld ordered the abuse, he should not apologize, not when the media and Dems intend on wielding such an apology as a club. If a sincere apology would help and we could proceed, fine, but I don't believe it for a second.

While Rumsfeld did fail to call this event to the attention of the Commander in Chief, something Bush has already rebuked him for, he probably still owes Congress an apology.
For ultimately, the buck stops at his desk when any of our troops fail to do their duties properly. The US military deployment in Iraq was woefully inadequate, largely due to Rumsfeld's involvement going into the war, despite warnings from the military. And still ultimately, this war would not have dragged on had he not taken control of this debacle. With a voluntary military and a protracted incursion, we have put ourselves in a position where we are using Reserve and National Guard troops with inadequate training to deal with the situations they are encountering, as well as working with overpaid contractors who do not know anything about true service. They work for money, not for honor.
I am a veteran of Desert Storm. Friends in my company were responsible from prisoners of war held at Log Base Echo near Hafir Al Batin, and I know for a fact that no abuse occurred there.

Like this?

"I'm sorry our troops have to listen to idiots like Fat Teddy and Charlie Rangle attack them like a raving Imam in a Wahhabi Mosque."
