Pictures from bejeweled crowning of the Wash. Times publisher at Senate office building

"We have no king but Jesus." -- John Ashcroft (quoting someone else)

That didn't take long. After members of Congress invited Sun Myung Moon into the Dirksen Senate Office Building Mar. 23 (as covered exclusively on this blog; here's the impressive guest list), where he crowned himself was crowned the Messiah, his movement was quick to incorporate images of the event in this movie [Windows Media MMS link] about Moon's accomplishments. It's the best footage yet of this remarkable Washington Times event.

First, there's a shot of Congress, emphasizing that this is the peak of the Times publisher's glory:

At 12:44, there ensues footage of the Dirksen Senate Office Building event. Where'd they get this shofar-blowing rabbi, who introduces Moon as quite possibly the Messiah?

Now here are some people at the Dirksen Senate Office Building, genuflecting to the Washington Times publisher and bringing him a crown. Here's the crown...

...and the coronation begins, here in the federal building...

That's not Rep. Davis bowing to Moon with one of the crowns, is it? Same goatee, same hairline, and Moon's own account claims that it was him. (An unnamed, unpictured Republican is said to have given him the robes. Could it have been Curt Weldon, who attended the event?)

And Moon gives a speech announcing that it's time to recognize him as the Messiah:

Lasting questions from this video: Who are those guys giving him a standing ovation at 14:40? Are any of them Congressmen that you recognize? And are we a monarchy now? I'm confused.

...any readers of Korean out there see anything noteworthy in these captions?

As I'm sure you can all guess, a liberal buddy of mine sent this over to me with the questions "What is this?  Why is this happening?  Is this even real?"  I have no clue about any of this.  Are Curt Weldon, Chris Cannon, Lindsay Graham, Mark Anderson, and Larry Pressler really involved with this???

Insightful commentary will be much appreciated, but a runaway vanity wouldn't be so bad either.

Thanks in advance.

Moon is a crazy freakazoid, and any politician would be well-advised to keep his distance.

Moon's organization owns the Times. That much I know. What I don't understand is the link between Moon and conservative politics/politicians.

Near as I can figure, Moon put together this "Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace".  Their about page says:  "This affirmation of religion's contribution is fully interreligious in spirit, welcoming the participation of all the world's great religious traditions."

I guess that was enough to reel in a Rabbi, an imam, and Hindu and some various others.  Looks like with all of them there, it was enough to sway several of our Congress critters to take a step into the spotlight.  Dopes.

Not to create the impression that only R's were there, if you look at the top of the attendee list, half of the Congressional Black Caucus was there too.

Self serving dopes, all of 'em.

They do this every year, and have, to my recollection, been doing it for seven or eight years (could be longer). And every year they have a difference bunch of congressional sponsors on the host committee. The weirdest part has to be the crowns. But I don't think they do any harm.

If that was Je$$ee Ja¢k$on'$ event, it would have been front page news, and the media would have celebrated it as promoting peace through tolerance, diversity and dialogue. Yet, since Moon owns the Washington Times, a newspaper that does not run its content through a liberal, politically correct filter; there must be a right-wing conspiracy afoot.

Fair enough, but if I think Moon is a flake, why should I trust his paper? I'm not talking about a right-wing conspiracy. I'm wondering what Moon's agenda is and how the Wash. Times fits into it.

If Free Republic's role is to defend the U.S. constitution, I''d think more conservatives would be upset about members of both parties showing such disregard for the part that says Congress should establish no titles of nobility.

Especially if Moon is openly advocating the downfall of Christianity (see one of the recent posts.) What does it all mean? Let's not just cover our ears and cry out, "conspiracy theory," these are actual photos of something unseemly.
