I want to know if there is a need for a 12-step thread on Free Republic, every day (like Word for the Day)?
Many people, myself included, were emboldened by Rush Limbaugh's public confession of addiction. I myself admitted that I am a recovering cocaine addict with almost one year of sobriety (Thank G-d and Narcotics Anonymous for that). There are many others who I feel might benefit from such an ongoing, daily thread.
I'd be willing to host it daily, like RikaStrom hosts Word-For-The-Day. It would necessarily be located in General Interest (chat). Some days when I was rather busy, I might not be able to do more than start this thread, but other days I'd be involved in it closely.
Moderators, could you leave this up in News for a while? I want maximum exposure to the largest possible FR public.
Thanks for your opinion. I'll definitely take it under advisement.
However, just as an FYI, Rush would not be the topic of this thread.
It's true. There are people around FR that would be beside themselves with joy to find out 'so and so' was addicted to 'such and such'. And they would have no qualms about bringing it up on a totally unrelated thread, just because they are losing an arguement.
Yes, there is. Red Sox fans and Libertarians - especially if the two are rolled into one - are quite obviously addicted to losing and to pain.
Rebelbase, Leni has been pretty mean to me for a long time, but, she has a right to her opinion. Frankly, she makes a couple of good points. So let her voice her honest opinion.
I was heavily addicted to benzodiazpine over a period of three years, all the time having no problem getting prescriptions from my doctors. I can't see where it would have been any easier to kick had it been illegal. I have been clean and sober for 12 years this month, but had a year of hell in and out of treatment centers trying to get clean.
I had nurses in the treatment centers tell me of many little old ladies that would be climbing the walls when their "little blue pills" were taken away, and I think this is a major problem that people are almost completely unaware of. I never had a doctor question me about my drug use, the length of time I was on them, etc., but a nurse or two expressed alarm.
If there is one person who is taking Xanax, Valium, Librium, or Klonopin (my drug of choice) who might be made aware of the addiction they may have, it would be a great service.
As to the confidentiality question, we are all here under screen names, annonymous.
If just one person would seek treatment, I think a thread would be well worth it, and with Rush's situation calling national attention to the problem, maybe more will become aware.
There are some forums on the net that one might search also.
Coke is a tuff one - I am pleased to see you a year out. If there's going to be a ping-list then sign me up
When I got out of the Army, I was a facilitator in a drug and Alcohol abuse program put together by the VVA, in the neighborhood I grew up in, I should have been a padre.
One of the toughest things that a person can do is admit he has a problem, the toughest is to tell all of those he knows that he has one.
Over the years that I have been signed on or lurked on FR there have been a lot of people who were very upfront with the problems that they have had in the past, kudos to you for being upfront.
This is serious Biz, for you clowns out there.
and
Pinging Druggies!
You are demonstrating the downside of such a thread. If people are intending to come in there and mock people's sincere attempt to get and stay clean, then I'll fold before we even start it.
Hence the *.Anonymous. Just because you or I may be in recovery isn't a good reason to walk around this board with a bullseye on for every a$$hole here to take a shot at.
Food for thought.

Yes sometimes!
A few considerations.:
1) The fundamentalists consider AA a cult. As to NA . . . .
2) It would have to be a subscribe only forum. I wouldn't want a bunch of disruptors making fun of people in Recovery.
3) I think it would offend a lot of Freepers.
That being said I would like to do a thread when Rush gets out of treatment showing experience and support from recovering freepers. The vast majority of people here have no clue what alcoholism is and might not be able to handle the truth. They definitely don't know what the 12 steps are!
I made no comments of my own, just posted a long list of your own words with dates and times they appeared on the anti-freeper forum you hung on. They were obscene and full of vile remarks and accusations against JimR and FR.
The meaness was in your own words, never from my keyboard. I had had enough of your nastiness against our forum, our founder and our freepers.
I certainly wouldn't want any advice from you, ever. Nor will I tolerate your false accusation of "meaness".
If you want to continue this part of the colloquay, go ahead. Make my day.
Leni
I never got quite that far down that road, but I know many, many wonderful, talented people who have. ;-)
