Student in jail for drugs is raped

An Alachua County college student in jail on marijuana charges was raped over the weekend by his cell mate, a man already being held on sexual battery charges, authorities said Monday.

The 19-year-old student was serving four weekends in jail on charges of delivering marijuana, said Alachua County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Troiano. Last weekend was the first weekend of his sentence.

His cell mate held a ballpoint pen to the teenager's neck at about 9 p.m. Friday and then forced himself on him, Troiano said. A member of the victim's family reported the incident to authorities on Saturday.

Jail detention officers, who check the cells at least once an hour, heard nothing and nothing was reported to them Friday, Troiano said.

Randolph Jackson, 35, was charged with sexual battery. Jackson has been in jail since July on charges of sexual battery in a different case that is still pending.

The two were put in a cell together because they were both charged with felonies, Troiano said. Also, there was very little room in the jail last weekend, Troiano added. There were 918 inmates and the jail's capacity is 920.

"If there was space available, absolutely we would rather keep our weekenders in a pre-designated area," Troiano said. "But because we don't have much space available we have to do with circumstances on hand."

Inmates are assigned to cells based on their charges, their history and other factors, he said.

These two inmates were being held in a two-man cell in pod 1-B. Inmates who are awaiting trial or who don't yet have a jail classification are kept in this section, Troiano said.

Jail officials don't house inmates who are charged with misdemeanors, which are less serious crimes, with those who have felony charges, he said.

Troiano said this was the first sexual battery reported at the jail in the memory of jail officials.

Jackson never showed any signs of having sexual tendencies toward other inmates, Troiano added. He has since been moved to his own cell.

Re-read the post. I said that the prison RAPIST should be castrated. If he is completely castrated (including penectomy), he will not physically be able to, nor sexually inclined to commit a rape. It's like gelding an uncontrollable racehorse. Also, castration has the added beneficial effect to society of taking the violent criminal out of the gene pool.

As for the "student," he was the victim of a crime while in prison. While I sympathize with him, or any other victim of a crime, we must recognize that he put himself there; that he put himself at risk.

I agree that this country needs to address its drug laws and methods of criminal punishment. However, people need to be responsible for their individual actions.

The article does not appear to express any political viewpoint whatsoever. Try reading it once more. Shocking as this may seem, it does however provide ammunition for a particular sympathetic political viewpoint for three reasons:

1) Because the article describes circumstances which are a reality, to whatever extent, that would not be reported upon if they did not occur.

2) Because the sympathetic viewpoint is intellectually sound and morally correct; it is those who would defend rape that resort to desperation tactics.

3) Because it underscores the irrationalism of the drug warriors who are so hellbent on their mission that they are incapable of even conceding that this rape was evil.

The endorsement of evil is of course an evil of its own accord, which should go without saying when communicating with normal people.

Well I did a quick google search, and it seems that Libertraians are trying to get rid of all references to it, since the first link I saw on google was "unlinked", but I did find this link.

Isn't it better to avoid "macho flash", and project a happy, reassuring image to the public, to entice them into libertarianism?

Those of us in the revolutionary vanguard of the libertarian movement say no. We believe that the present statist political-economic system, like all statist systems throughout history, will eventually self-destruct and collapse. For reasons too complex to outline here, we believe that this will happen relatively soon. When this happens, people will look for explanations for the collapse and ways to create an orderly, peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable society out of the chaos of the colla.

Wrong. There is no reason to strain on this side of the argument. As our prisons are 1/2 full of non-violent drug offenders, and as a side note we lock up more of our citizens than ANY OTHER COUNTRY, take away the WOsD and the prison would not have been full and they could have segregated the violent and non-violent prisoners. The WOsD is wrong from a moral and especially a conservative point of view.

As for the rape itself, it is obviously a tragedy. I see people in this thread wrestling with killers getting raped vs. the delivery guy getting raped. Come on people, rape is not a part of our punishment system. It is wrong in every instance. You people who think it is ok 'sometimes' might be more comfortable in one of those hot, sandy places. Maybe you could cut someone’s hand off for stealing. Maybe cut their tongue out for speaking against the government. We are not the animals, they are.

Get serious. How many adolescent and pre-teen recreational drug users are there? The answer is NONE -every one of them is the victim of a crime. Yet, drug use among these young people goes on because it is abetted by the older dealers (and I also include mass growers and transporters in the same category). I have one kid in high school, two more in jr. high, and a fourth in elementary school. I know for a fact that there is drug use (primarilly marijuana and alcohol) in the jr. high schools. A baseball teammate of my son got busted in a locker search for pot. Someone, probably not unlike the college student in the post, facilitated that young person's drug use. There are victims - lots of them.

IIRC, convenience store clerks that are caught selling alcohol or tobacco to minors are FINED, not JAILED, for their offense of "victimizing" children.
