Genetic Changes In Mice 'Question Evolution Speed'

Genetic changes in mice 'question evolution speed'

A species of mouse has evolved dramatically in just 150 years, showing genetic change can occur much faster than was thought possible.

The discovery was made by accident by two American biologists studying the genetic make-up of a common wild mouse in Chicago.

Dr Dennis Nyberg and Dr Oliver Pergams, both from the University of Illinois at Chicago, analysed DNA samples from 56 museum specimens of the white-footed mouse dating back to 1855, and 52 wild mice captured from local forests and parks.

They found startling genetic differences between the 19th century and modern mice.

Only one of the present-day mice had DNA that matched that of mice collected before 1950.

While fast evolutionary change has been seen in fruit flies, such rapid evolution in a mammal has not been reported before.

The scientists, whose findings appear in the journal Nature, believe humans may have been partly responsible for the "new" mice.

"Settlers may have brought in mice with the favourable gene that were able to out-compete mice with the native variant," said Dr Pergams.

On the other hand, she might enjoy taking on a woman hater. I have just about decided that ALS is a DU plant, here to troll up some laughs. Either that or an evolutionist trying to discredit creationists.

Don't tell ALS what "discredit" means or he might beat up a woman, just to get even.

Right now these guys are involved in a slew of hand-wringing and trying to figure out who they can bring in to save them, since they've obviously made complete baboons out of themselves.

oh the agony

courtesy reminder of why:

Seems as though the Eviloonies are having some troubles touching on this..

You're right, she would probably find it interesting, in a sick twisted sort of way. But you never know, he might actually learn something.

So, as the primordial soup became protein enriched, how did the single-celled creatures evolve into something with a nervous system, a circulatory system, a respiratory system, and a digestive system, all of which rely upon al of the others for their own function and existence

Single celled creatures probably first evolved into undifferentiated multicellular agglomerates. Once you had many cells, a primitive kind of intercellular communication probably arose, which made it possible for some differentiation to occur. After all, single cells respond to external chemical signals; at some stage they started responding to substances other cells were making. So, in effect, this allows one cell to tell the second, 'you take care of sex, and I'll do the rest'. Ever see a slime mold do its thing? It's fascinating to watch.

You have still in existence several very primitive creatures with two body layers, differentiated essentially into gut and external layer. The gut could then evolve more complex structures. The chordate nervous system evolved from a more primitive notochord, which was initially an involution of the external layer of cells.

It is untrue to say that all these systems depend on others. There are many, many organisms that lack nervous systems; many that lack respiratory systems; and quite a few that lack digestive systems.

It is true there is a relative paucity of fossil data for very small, soft bodied creatures. There is, however, other evidence, particularly biochemical and genetic evidence. We can trace complex intracellular communication pathways in chordates to more primitive systems in tunicates and to other systems in invertebrates, by looking at the genes.

But if you want a single general principle or evolution of complex biological systems, it's duplication followed by differentiation. If you want a big complex biological system, be it a large multi-subunit protein, or an organ, or an organism, or a genome, start with a single subunit and duplicate it. Once you have two, they can develop separate and interdependent functions, without compromising any essential ones.
