There is now nothing preventing the President and congress from restoring our republic to what the Founders intended.

You sound like the Republicans have 61 Senators in the Senate, which they do not. They only have 51 (maybe), one of whom, Chafee, may jump. The Republicans cannot end filibusters having only 51 Senate seats. A skillful and stubborn Democrat political infighter will tie the Senate into knots, the Republicans will be unable to do anything without Democrat cooperation.

Here in Florida, we had several State House and Senate seats where Democrats ran unopposed by Republicans, but there was a Libertarian opponent(there were a few where it was a Rep. vs. Lib, too). In most races, the Libertarian got 20% to 25%. Guess what? That means that in some cases, the refusal of Republicans to vote for a Libertarian, when there was NO Rep. running, put Democrats in the government.

That right there is sad. Any numbers on total votes cast, that is to say, did the Republican voters simply not vote in those races, or did they swing Dem? Here in CT-3 we had Dem/GOP/Green running for House, but the only L representation was for Treasurer, Comptroller, Secretary of State. Didn't even have ANY third parties running against Rowland/Curry for governor.

Excuse me, did I say that Libertarians should just bend over and take it? No I didn't! What I said is that we need to work together to defeat a common enemy! Does electing a Socialist help your cause? No it doesn't! Nor does it help the GOP.

What was my word? Wasn't it "COALITION"? That means that both factions need to talk and work out a platform that is acceptable to both sides. Duh!

Of course, if your only issue is legal pot; well then maybe you should seek out the "Green" party. We can sort out the pot question later. I could make a strong case for legalizing it to make it harder for kids to get. However; I'd strongly oppose any effort to "de-criminalize" it!

I predict right here and now that this thread will go over 1,000 replies.

I predict you'll be more accurate than any pollster from 4 November.

Ok, so a Dem minority in the Senate might be able to stop Republicans from revoking laws, cutting taxes, ending programs.

But I think Republicans are going to pass laws to make government bigger. Dems won't stop that. I also think they're going to renew big government, unconstitutional legislation that expires (assault weapons ban). Dems won't stop that either. What's the excuse then?

Ed gave the Governor's Mansion to Bingo Jim by getting 10% of the vote. Governor McCallum lost the election by only 3%. Thanks Ed.

You're welcome! Next time run a better candidate with better ideas and you won't have to cry that someone else screwed you. Maybe next time your party should address the concerns of freedom lovers and earn their vote.

IL can say much the same for Cal Skinner. I don't know how much of the vote Cal got, but it is likely that Jim Ryan would have won there rather than the Democrat were it not for Cal.

Better check the results, the Republican lost all by himself. He sucks, they deserved to lose.

Let's keep in mind that Libertarians and Republicans are generally going in the same direction.

Bzzt, put on your dunce cap and go to the back of the class and stand in the corner.

All of this is aimed at the author of the article.

It is well past time for Libertarians and Republicans to get together to defeat the common enemy.

A common misconception. Enemies of freedom are the opponents of Libertarians. Most Republicans at this time fall into that catagory along with Democrats.

In 20 years it won't be a two party system. I can see four primary parties aligned on two sides...On the right will be the Republicans and Libertarians/Constitution Party and on the left will be the democrats and the greens.

That I would love to see. If the Greens/LP together could get enough seats in the House to prevent a clear GOP/Dem majority either way, only then will there be a chance for issues to actually be debated, openly, with people making principled decisions. Reading DU (and having paid attention the last two years), the Dems seem to be self-destructing, which will only help the Greens. Right-center and left-center are both too wishywashy for me.

Oregon will probably get a dumb-aas-crap as our governor recount thanks to the Libertarian getting 5% of the vote,

If you really believe that Libertarians all come from the Republican column, you need help.

I hope this moves your party towards freedom and away from DEMOlite. If not, may they never win again.

Yeah... That's the ticket! Lets all see if we can do something to make the Libs happy and get our total vote take down to 3%. Makes sense to me...

Or you can continue to vote for massive pork farm bills, prescription drugs, social security, and other Dem planks. That'll guarantee you more spoilers later.

Excuse me, but are you aware that without political power your agenda goes no where? The Greens have no power; how far is their agenda advancing? The Libertarians have no power; how far is their agenda advancing? In the case of the Libertarians, their agenda is loosing ground. In a number of states that had Republican Governors, and no longer do; the Green Party will make more advances.

Sir, you are just cutting off your nose to spite your face. Without power, principal means nothing. We are a world governed by power (ask any Cuban exile). If you have no power, you are standing on a principal supported by nothing.

I like most of the Libertarian agenda, and want it incorporated into the GOP. Wake up and smell the smoke; that smoke is what is left of the Constitution. We don't have much time left!

it is their mantra.....

I will wait to see what the GOP will do over the next two years that it holds the House, Senate, and Presidency.

By all probability the Dems will tie the Senate in knots and the Republican excuse about not getting their agenda out will be that their majority is not big enough to stop a filibuster. I dispise the Dems but one has to give the devil his due sometimes, they know how to use the rules to their advantage and are bold about it. The Pubs never learned how to opperate well in the minority. (Then again the cynical look held by some would be they they intentionally don't want to as they agree with the Dem agenda in spirit differing only in degree)

The only way a libertarian agenda will be advanced is if one of the major-party candidates adopts libertarian positions. If the libertarian vote can be taken for granted, then no candidate need take us into consideration. Thus, by being a voting bloc that a candidate for office must woo to be elected, our agenda is advanced far more effectively.

I would not at all say the libertarian agenda is losing ground. The nation is far less statist than it was under Clinton, and continues to trend in our direction. The authoritarian left has less power than at any time since Reagan, and the right is less authoritarian than it once was.

Being able to swing an election contest between the two colossal parties, we have more power than if we were dedicated to one party. Sure we are natural allies to the GOP, since republicanism and libertarianism are perfectly compatible, but our principles prevent us from supporting an authoritarian GOPer for the same reason we don't support Democrats - we want government out of our lives and out of our business. Whoever gives us that gets our votes. It's usually the GOP candidate, but not always - and not being able to take us for granted prevents many a GOP candidate from turning into a RINO rat.

You just said: The reason Republicans cannot stop themselves from expanding social programs is because the only people in the country who are opposed to expanding social programs will not vote for them.

LOL! (thanks, I needed that)

Only to a power-hungry Republican is a libertarian 'all about drugs and pornography'. Sure, a libertarian has no objection to someone doing drugs or viewing pornography, but those things only are important to someone attempting to discredit libertarian philosophy.

If you are a true conservative, or a true republican, then you will see a lot of other things from libertarians first:

... and so on.

Any so-called conservative who sees the libertarian as anything other than the most natural of friends and allies is an ideological fanatic and a fool.
