I have two teenage daughters. They have been telling us ever since the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal hit the press that most of their peers do not consider oral sex to be sex and that in both middle and high school oral sex is common. We've had many talks with them about this and they seem to have their heads on straight about it (hopefully this is not parental denial), but if what we hear is accurate, in middle school maybe 15-20% of girls had given oral sex by the end of 8th grade and in high school, the number is probably closer to 50-60%. Their friends in the local private schools report even higher numbers, it's almost a rite of passage for them. And this is an upper and upper-middle class suburb.

The only positive thing I can say about this is that they report that in their high school, girls who feel pressured by boyfrieds to go all the way (and who doesn't remember what teenage boys are like) will perform oral sex but refuse intercourse, and that most girls report that works. Apparently the girls (who knows what the boys think) can pretty much emotionally divorce themselves from it in a way they cannot or do not from actual intercourse. Bad as it is, it's better than pregnancies and the emotional effects of early teen intercourse.

And sexually-transmitted diseases are better than pregnacies, also!

A new twist on moral equivalency, I guess.

I don't envy anyone being parents of teen-agers and younger in this post-Clinton era.

Not really a "positive" aspect, either, IMHO.

I don't mean to sound cruel, but it sounds like a these girls are gearing up for a certain very old profession.

So people in the Islamic countries are willing to commit suicide, perform acts of terror, fight to the death, and live under oppressive totaliterian governments to prevent the intrusion of "Western values" such as these into their homes and their lives and to keep them away from their children?

Americans cannot prevent such "values" from intruding into theirs! Americans cannot keep such "values" out of their schools and away from their children.

Americans twice elected a psychopath who was the foremost promoter of such "values" to the presidency of the U.S. And then the people of New York voted is wife into the U.S. Senate.

I make no endorsement of suicide bombers or international terrorists, but Americans--who have allowed such "values" to suffuse their culture--can thank themselves for any universal condemnation and loathing of the United States.

Anyone who has questions about why the U.S. is despised so profoundly need look no further than this article.

Such decadence--such "values"--as these are despised by decent people everywhere and for all time--me included!

This is yet one more example of "Liberal" decadence--the greatest threat the U.S. faces--far greater than any foreign enemy. The U.S.A. can not be destroyed by any foreign enemy. But it can be destroyed from within--and this kind of decadence is the very thing that will destroy it.

Some foreign cultures--notably Islam--are threatened by such Western concepts as liberty, justice, and democracy and are resistant to them. However the resistance could be expected to attenuate and eventually even disappear, in view of the advantages, basic goodness, universal acceptability, and profound truth of these concepts.

However the real resistance is to such decadence and degeneracy as depicted in this article. This is where these people will--and should--make their last stand.

What the hell! If this is what the West stands for, I might just join 'em.

Are you saying that the oral sex we're talking about is ONE-WAY ONLY? The boys aren't reciprocating and performing on the girls?

That's only half of the oral-sex equation. If the guy isn't willing to return the favor, "cut him off."

Come to think of it...

It's 'badder' than you think. STDs can be spread through oral sex. And the guys get to thinking the girls are just there for their gratification, so the next step could easily be 'forcefully' convincing the girl to go ahead with intercourse. It's far better if the girl has enough self-esteem to kick the guy to the curb if he pressures her too much. After all, he doesn't REALLY care about her if he's threatening to walk if she doesn't give in.

Higher rates of O.S. in PRIVATE schools. Noooo, it can't be I refuse to believe it surely such behavior could only occur in the EVIL public schools. Just ask those who vibrate with hatred for them.

Two years ago we did a survey for the high school newspaper on sex in an attempt to get parents to realize the seriousness of the problem. The school has 950 students. However, the survey only covered 511 students who were enrolled in English classes. In any case, we found that 230 of those surveyed had oral sex (yes, I consider it sex, since it has the name sex in its title after all)....that is 45%. Then, we found that 186 surveyed....36%, had committed sexual intercourse. Keep in mind this was done here in a pretty conservative, Free Methodist, Bible-thumper town. I can only imagine how saddening the numbers are for those that are living in the inner city.

Oral sex CAN give you STD's. I only wish the kids knew that. In our article we tried to get them to understand that.

I have graduated this year, but I am very proud of the journalism I did while on the paper. Sometimes our editorials were liberal, sometimes they were conservative (of course my columns were always conservative). But, in every case, we tried to get people to think and that is what matters. I am glad I will get to continue this in college.

I have never understood this. For me, putting some man's penis into my mouth is a very intimate experience (as is intercourse). These girls have had to have been de-sensitized long before this to do this so freely. This is not an overnight thing --- it is years of schools "sex education" programs which end up equating sex with any other bodily function, divorcing any sort of emotion from it. Jocelyn Elders is a strong proponent of masturbation and oral sex as a replacement for intercourse, and the public school sex ed programs are pounding the same drum.
