In fact, I have read of a few young men who are coming of age, and who were NOT circumcised, and are choosing to undergo circumcision.

Seems that their sexual partners aren't interested in oral sex. Not as clean.

The topic of circumcision regularly comes up on another message board I frequent, and it's been interesting reading the pros and cons.

With our first boy, we persuaded our Ob/Gyn doctor to circumcise on the eighth day, the norm for hospitals at that time being the third day. We were able to show research that indicated that the levels of anti-coagulants and pain suppressors normally peaked on day eight, and she agreed. Our son, never given to suppressing his emotions, fussed slightly at the [cold] plastic pelvic restraint used, but didn't seem to notice the cut, which was almost bloodless. The next two boys had a similar experience, none of them remember it, and we still have a very good relationship!

The doctor was impressed by the scientific backing behind what I consider to be both a spiritual covenant, as well as being a health benefit. She became an advocate of 8th day circumcision, and, with our permission, invited other staff to witness. The boys are probably glad not to remember this!

And to the oldest, who posts here, I'll say, Son, I love you, I did it for you, and it hurt me more than it seemed to hurt you!

Now, as for my daughter, I left perfection alone.

   The only reason for an adult male to ever be circumcised would be congenital defects, or slovenly grooming habits. There is no medically-sound basis for performing this procedure on an otherwise healthy male.

So why don't Muslim clerics CONDEMN it? Can't they excommunicate (or whatever they call it) any African Muslim who condones this practice?

Because their is no central religious authority in Islam (like the Papacy). (the first Arab Imperial state killed off virtually all of Mohammed's descendants)

Also, because in Africa-- the clerics are African themselves and probably seek to preserve the animist culture the were raised into.

Have you ever thought that the reason Islam is so barbaric and cruel is that it is a religion that originated in the nomadic tribal regions of the middle-east, and to those people, this is everyday life?

That may indeed be a factor, it's true that casual cruelty to people and animals doesn't seem to be particularly evil to people who are themselves suffering and struggling just to survive in a harsh environment where hardship and pain are everyday realities. But islam institutionalizes murder and cruelty as an offical intrument for converting the "infidel" world, and for keeping it's believers from accepting "heresies" such as Christianity.

Barbaric treatment of people by primitive, semi-civilized tribesmen is one thing, murder and torture as a deliberate policy of the educated and urbane clergy of an organized religious institution is something else. I believe the unspeakable cruelties practiced by the apostate medieval church were just as Satanically inspired as the cruelties of islam. But the church was reformed during the renaissance, and forced conversion was eventually proscribed both by the reformers and the Catholic church. Meanwhile, islam continues to force conversions and punish "infidels" by murder and persecution just as it has for 1400 years. This is also true to a lesser degree of some other false religions, but islam is the most notorious offender. I believe that all religions except Judaism and Christianity are Satanic in origin, but islam in particular seems to be his preferred instrument for persecution of the church and Judaism.
