Finland's president on why he believes Canada could — eventually — be part of the EU

Finnish President Alexander Stubb says he exchanges messages with Prime Minister Mark Carney almost every day.

Stubb is in Ottawa for his first official bilateral meetings with Canada's prime minister. The pair are working to develop trade and defence ties, according to Carney's office.

"With shared interests, values and a commitment to international security, I look forward to hosting President Stubb to deepen our partnership to create stability, security and prosperity for both our peoples," Carney wrote in a statement.

Carney has called the Trump administration's weaponization of trade through the use of tariffs a "rupture" to the global order.

While Stubb doesn't use the same "tough language" as Carney, he does believe a transformation is taking place.

"I think foreign policy and diplomacy is never completely binary. It's not black and white, unless we go into war," he said.

"We agree on the fact that the world order is changing."

While that change may be coming, for now, Finland and Canada must maintain their relationship with the U.S., particularly regarding security, Stubb said.

Canada already has a history and collective mentality of being part of the British Commonwealth.

Ontario does. Not so much the prairie provinces, whose history and immigration patterns are different. Quebec is its own thing (feels like part of Brit control, but bristles under it).

As far as the role that public sentiments can play in this, I consider Trump’s ill conceived attacks on Canada, questioning its sovereignty (suggesting it could be a 51st state), as well as making Canada the first for additional tariffs, set in motion a rejection of Trump that is turning more into a rejection of the U.S. that can outlast Trump.

Trump should have instead proposed to Canada an end to all U.S. and Canadian tariffs between each other, towards forging a real North American real “free trade” union.

Instead Trump has been pushing Canada closer to the EU.

We are talking about sentiments here, and they may not make policies but they do have a sway in elections.

Who are the biggest losers as far as tariffs on Canada? American manufacturing industries that rely on raw materials and strategic parts from Canada - like auto makers.

I believe Carney is still in power in Canada because Trump boosts his standing as a Canada 1st nationalist.

America needs to tighten the belt and cut a lot of costs. But especially foreign aid and paying for other's defenses. Starting with NATO would be good start. Unfortunately, all those expenses allow the gravy train to continue for too many.
