It’s a silly article... generating silly comments in this thread. Much of the Catholic hierarchy leans left. Most priests over age 55 or so lean left. This is not news. I’m sure many if not most of them don’t like MAGA. But the Catholics who show up for Mass on Sunday lean right and vote MAGA, and that’s not changing. Don’t confuse nonsense spouted by some bishop or cardinal with the views of the folks in the pews.
Liberal Christianity, like liberalism in any religion, isn’t sustainable. If your attitude is “it’s all good,” then why bother? So, no, “Catholics” are not swinging left.
Some people reflexively hate “Rome” ... they’re simply following their programming. It’s sad, really. Many of them are otherwise intelligent people. On this one topic, they’re nuts.
After being raised Catholic and then spending many years around Protestants of all denominations, I found that all Christian denominations have both right and left wingers.
However, I also found that Catholic teachings are neither left nor right, but those teachings sometimes fall into both camps. For example, the Catholic Church is pro-life in all cases: It opposes both abortion and capital punishment.
I can count on one hand the number of Catholics I've met, worked with, and been related to that fit your wishful thinking view of Catholics.
Most of them are leftists and vote democrat and have for decades, if not their whole life. It is simply not true that lay Catholics overall lean right.
