President-elect Donald Trump’s remarks that Canada should become the 51st state drew condemnation and a patriotic outburst on Saturday from a former Canadian prime minister who offered blunt advice to the incoming U.S. leader: “Give your head a shake!”
Jean Chrétien, who was Canada’s prime minister from 1993 to 2003, joined a chorus of officials from the northern U.S. neighbor who say Trump’s remarks are no longer a joke and may undermine America’s closest ally.
Canada would never agree to become part of the United States, Chrétien wrote in an article published in The Globe and Mail newspaper, celebrating his 91st birthday.
He extolled his nation’s love of independence and said Trump’s remarks amounted to “totally unacceptable insults and unprecedented threats” to Canadian sovereignty.
“To Donald Trump, from one old guy to another, give your head a shake!” Chrétien said. “What could make you think that Canadians would ever give up the best country in the world — and make no mistake that is what we are — to join the United States? …

I don’t want liberal Canadians being added to our elections. Nothing in Canada is worth the cost of allowing them to vote in our elections.
There are many “liberal Canadians” whose existence is as real as those millions of “Biden voters” four years ago.
Jean Chrétien , the guy that talks out of the side of his mouth
Is he the little hair-lipped guy?
I think you’ll agree no more subsidies for you freeloaders
It is fun to watch how fast Trudeau's failing Canada has been reduced to the relevance of American State.
That’s okay; they decided in Canada long ago that they don’t want Canadians voting in Canadian elections. What we don’t need are the nonexistent “Canadian voters” that reinforced Trudeau’s erstwhile “basic dictatorship”.
Nobody wants Canada. Trump was joking. Greenland, on the other hand....
They claim to be independent - but their independence is bought and paid for everyday by American taxpayers.
Canadians can’t or don’t want to pay the tab.
But to hear them talk they will do anything to preserve their independence; anything but pay for it themselves.
Let’s see how “independent” they are if their governor general suddenly decides to refuse royal assent to any of their laws (veto power, one of the so-called “reserve powers” that the monarchy still holds). The fact that assent is so freely given is what has allowed the left to grow in power there.
Lol. None of the geniuses has figured out Trump’s negotiation tactics yet. The leaderships of most nations appear to be dominated by actual morons.
Trade California and Minnesota to Canada for Alberta.
Shove it, AP. The only thing that you are useful for is to demonstrate to folks still possessing some intelligence that there is no entity in the multiverse with less respect than you and your lot.
I agree.
I wouldn’t mind Adding Alberta province to the U.S., where Calgary is situated. From what I have read most of the population is politically conservative.
The Cretin needs to shake his booty.
Cretin!
