The Jewish Representative Council of Ireland has said it is appalled by remarks made by a Fine Gael councillor at a meeting of Dublin City Council last night.
Councillor Punam Rane has apologized for the remarks she made at last night’s local authority meeting during a motion on the Occupied Territories Bill.
Rane, who represents the Kimmage Rathmines Ward, said during the debate that the “USA should have taken a stance but how many of you know that the entire US economy is ruled by the Jews, is ruled by Israel. They will never be able to take a stance”.
“It will cripple the whole US economy if they take a stance. And therefore they’re afraid of taking a stance. That will never happen,” she said.
People Before Profit Councillor Conor Reddy asked her to clarify the remarks, describing them as unhelpful. “Her remarks on Jews controlling the American economy, I think that’s tremendously unhelpful. We’re all here in solidarity with Palestine. To equate Judaism and Zionism is … a complete fallacy. It’s wrong and I think we all stand against anti-Semitism and it would be helpful if she could withdraw that particular use of words.” …

how in the world could anyone be so incredibly ignorant?
Looks other than Irish to me.
You’d think the Irish would have enough bigots of their own without importing more.
The US economy would run a lot better than it does if it was actually run by Jews, assuming they are observant, Orthodox, Jews (and thus both Godly and extremely conservative).
Certainly willing to take the chance.

At one time in my life, I was shocked at the level of antisemitism in Ireland, but no more.
And the women especially, from Mary Robinson to Samantha Power to this worm.
I once wanted to visit Ireland, home of some of my forebears...
I wish the Irish would knock it off with the Irish Gaelic. Much like Ireland, it is completely irrelevant in the 21’st Century. As McCoy said, “It’s dead, Jim”.
As a descendant of Norse and Irish, my Irish side had a vicious hatred of England and the English, including the language she spoke.
Somewhat rational, given how the English treated them.
But that’s the reason they keep it alive. Just hatred.
It’s staggeringly beautiful. Very pleasant people, in general.
But I heard things like “Hitler should have killed them” and whatnot several times. Just out of the blue in small town pubs, someone would start ranting about Jews.
I’m a giant six foot plus Norseman and Irish with blue eyes and red hair. About as Jewish as Eric the Red, fwiw.
I feel the same
Out of the frying pan and into the fire. "Don't dis the Jews while we side with a land controlled by their enemies."
They are indeed knocking it off. The EUSSR is effectively killing the Irish Gaelic language even in ares where it remains the dominant vernacular.
There are still small town pubs? I heard that recent anti-alcohol legislation is putting hundreds of them out of business.
Maybe so. This was a while ago.
My wife (Apache, like born on reservation Apache) is fascinated with castles and European battles for reasons completely unknown. I think it is from reading lord of the rings too many times. And Gothic horror.
So we launched our last to college and took two months to tour the countryside of Ireland and Britain.
Did France and Germany and Switzerland the next.
And Eastern Europe this past summer. That was difficult. In addition to English, I speak Spanish and German. She speaks English, Spanish, French, Mescalero. None of that is super useful when in Romania. We both took a ton of Latin and could limp by with Latin, French, and German but really had a hard time understanding.
Regardless, the best part to me was largely avoiding the huge capital cities and being in country.
