A new study has added fuel to concerns that America could face a surge in dementias in coming years and decades due to COVID.
The research found that nearly two-thirds of people over 65 who were hospitalized with the virus went on to suffer cognitive decline, which can be a precursor for dementia, weeks and months after the infection cleared.
Independent experts told DailyMail.com this is a trend they're watching closely, since if there is a link, it could affect the millions of older adults who were infected with the virus.
CDC data shows that over-65s accounted for nearly half of hospitalizations in the first two years of the pandemic, or roughly 1.7m people. The new study stops short of concluding that COVID and dementia are definitively linked, but experts described the evidence as 'compelling'.
Roughly 65 percent of over-65s in the study who were hospitalized with the virus had some degree of mild cognitive impairment, a brain-fog like condition which can sometimes be a precursor to dementia.
Researchers aren't sure why COVID could be causing these changes in the brain, but theorize it could have to do with inflammation or changes in blood flow, Dr Vin Gupta, a pulmonologist and public health physician not involved in the research, told DailyMail.com.
'Given the growing evidence from similar studies, the findings are compelling and somewhat expected,' Dr Pennie said.
No prior studies have concluded that COVID-19 causes dementia, but multiple previous studies have shown that there may be a link between the two, Dr Gupta said.

Wouldn’t have anything to do with that concoction pushed into the arm of these same people, probably multiple times, right?
No, those are safe and effective
My FIL’s hospice nurse believes it was. She couldn’t believe the explosion of dementia, aggressive, fast-progressing, and in younger people than she’d ever seen.
She said this as a multi-vaxxed and boosted person (also called herself a ticking time bomb)
Tupperware causes cancer.
There’s not a home. pretty much the world over, that doesn’t have a few pieces of Tupperware. ;)
So they are going to blame COVID for causing dementia and not the multiple injections of spike proteins that was forced on everyone in Australia.
BS
Vaccine induced
Still not getting shot for anything.
Most everyone has some degree of dementia. It’s part with dying IMHO.
The title suggests this news is surprising and touches every home.
NOT!
I was well aware of the risks long before actual evidence of the harm (including more likely to get covid) and death the shots caused. And considering the wife and I have never had the shots, nor had covid, we are not touched by it.
Maybe getting older had something to do with it.
I had to quit Tupperware. Kept getting stuck in my teeth.
It's not enough that have these extremely stupid California "Prop 65" warning stickers on every product we buy...noooo...the companies are now sending you text messages about the dangers in their products.
About 2/3s of those that got the jab, about 50% total in the US, started a 5-10 yr ticking clock on themselves
We’re about 3 yrs into that now.
It’s only gonna get worse from here.
LMAO! But it wasn’t created in a lab, right?
Oh, and the vax was safe and effective. They’re falling over themselves not to blame the vax.
Yup.
More likely people that read liberal media stories like this get dumber a story at a time.
We were a Rubbermaid household.
Biden must have gotten his first Covid vax 3 1/2 years ago.
“The new study stops short of concluding that COVID and dementia are definitively linked, but experts described the evidence as ‘compelling’. “
LOL- What they actually just basically admitted is that Dementia and the clot shot are linked.
“Research into advanced COVID studies (’Gain of Function’) is worth the risk of pandemic.”
