A Tennessee car owner's DIY 'rubber bumper' caused a mass false bomb alert and led to local businesses closing and sending nearby schools into lockdown for hours.
The unidentified Murfreesboro, TN owner had duct-taped two white cloths to the passenger side of the car with wires running out around the front door handle. The 'rubber bumper' was being held with suction cups and was meant to prevent dents.
Whether this prevented dents to the car or not, it surely led to a bomb scare that forced police to evacuate the area around a local First Watch restaurant for two hours.
First responders were sent to the location just after 9.30am to respond to reports of a bomb being attached to the car.
According to Murfreesboro police, nearby buildings were evacuated and several schools in the school zone were locked down as investigators assessed the scene.
The Murfreesboro Police Department said in a statement, 'All businesses in the shopping plaza were evacuated for nearly two hours as a precaution.'
Leslie Huggins told WKRN.com: 'They told us there was a bomb threat and basically screamed at us to get out of the building.'
Authorities also reported that the call resulted in a massive response from local, state and federal agencies.
A police supervisor at the scene then contacted the owner, who was standing on the other side of the street with the public, unaware that it was his car that had caused mass hysteria.
But once the man explained his DIY project to the police, all alerts were paused.
Larry Flowers, Public Information Officer for Murfreesboro Police and Fire Rescue Department said: 'We had a massive, massive response to this location to find out it was a man who was trying to prevent his car from being dented.'

OK ... I can sorta understand why folks thought that was a bit dodgy looking ...
I am reminded of pencil case bomb boy in Texas.
I call BS. This guy wanted to cause this scene. Why else would he need the wires? Tape and padding would have been more than enough. Also, what point is there in preventing dings when the “cure” is ten times the eyesore of the “disease”.?
CIA/DHS/Deep-state apparatchiks in DC are high-fiving each other today, for successfully creating so much fear and stupidity in America.
“Why else would he need the wires?”
the wires were there to keep him from losing the bumpers if the suction cups failed
Country boy will survive.
Agree. Aside from the wires, I doubt he just failed to realize from across the street that all of the LEOs were swarming around his car.
This was stupid on both sides of the issue.............

But was your first thought OMG, it’s a bomb! I must alert the authorities!
People are so dramatic these days.
“Why else would he need the wires?”
I think it’s because they are only held on with suction cups, which inevitably will fail, so if there are no wires, they’re just going to fall off and be lost when he is on the highway.
No kidding. What a DUMB thing to do. Funny they didn’t name the car owner. Was it Mohammad, by chance?
Bet the feds are pissed they didn’t at least get to shoot a dog.
What is a LEO?
Maybe he saw that odd looking suggestion online under “Sponsored Content” “Whenever you park in a busy area, always do THIS to prevent dents and body damage!”
If you were to see something in a public place that you think is likely to be a bomb, what would you do?

Annual prize winner!
With rampant car hijackings in Democrat run cities, it would be easy to assume that those are claymore mines!
