Pet owners have been urged to look out for a virus that is spiking in some parts of the US and is lethal in dogs.
Parvovirus, often referred to as parvo — a highly-contagious disease that kills up to 90 percent of pooches — is above average levels in at least three parts of the country, New York state, DC and Missouri.
The most common symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. The virus is not tracked, so the total number of dogs to have died is not known.
Veterinarian Dr Hannah Lau told WNBC: 'Any breed of dog can become sick from parvovirus, but Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, American Pit Bull Terriers, English Springer Spaniels, and German Shepherds may see an increased risk'
New York health officials released an alert which said the Animal Care Centers (ACC) had diagnosed 14 dogs as of March 14, with the majority in puppies and younger dogs in Bronx and Manhattan facilities.
This far exceeded what is usually seen in a whole year.
And a shelter in Missouri has seen a sharp rise in cases in puppies, with some vets seeing two to three sick parvo-infected dogs every day, and sometimes even five or six. The uptick has been attributed to the warmer weather.
Vets at the non-profit had seen several parvo cases in just 24 hours.

Great they arent happy enough killing us off, they’re going after our pets now.
Wow. Spreads through feces and everyone is going to those dog parks. We take our dog in the alley and I’m not anymore.
Parvo virus has been around a long time. One of the first inoculations my dogs get is the parvo vaccine.
pitbull lovers hardest hit
True, but TPTB like to do gain of function work on viruses.
Your dog isn’t inoculated against parvo?
Agreed. I think the reason Parvo has suddenly exploded is because people cannot afford visits to the Vet. If it’s a matter of affordability I will go without before my furry buddies do.
A vaccine exists for Parvo, why aren’t they using it?
I have spent thousands on my current dog. Both ACL’s torn and repair isn’t cheap. A parvo vax is cheap compared.

Had the dual ACL (CCL) tears on my last Rottweiler. $8k in a year. No regret.
Imagine how quiet and poop free the city parks would be if this happened. one can only hope.
Some dogs tear them, some don’t.
I’ve had dogs and cats killed by parvo. It is not a good way to go. They begin to stagger around like they were drunk, then go off and die.
Last cat, a sweet heart, died of Bob Cat Fever.
Sounds like what our dog just had, despite being vaxxed for parvo. Thankfully he’s ok.
Surgeon said if one goes, the other is likely to go.
Sure enough, second one blew out exactly one year later.
the reason all those breeds are seemingly more at risk is because they’re the most popular, bred by serial breeders and kept in less than ideal settings.
parvo generally (always?) attacks puppies. I don’t recall ever really seeing it strike an adult dog.
Yet another disease/condition that Ivermectin apparently cures.

For you Rottweiler owners, they are very vulnerable. I had one back in 1992. Vet double vaxed her for parvo and she still got it. Sound familiar. She became very ill, was in the hospital several days on IVs. Liver failing, not much hope, but she made it and lived for 10 more years. I also had a boxer at the same time and she did not catch the virus.
Isn’t it weird that there are these stories suddenly appearing today suggesting that people get rid of thief pets or switch to pet rats and goldfish and lo snd behold - Dog Covid!
