In a testy exchange with Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a self-described socialist, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz challenged them for frequently tagging him as a “billionaire” by reminding them that he grew up in subsidized housing, his parents never owned a home, and every penny he made he earned — “No one gave it to me.”
Schultz testified before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Mar. 29, which is investigating the attempts by Starbucks employees to unionize in certain areas. Starbucks operates more than 33,000 coffee shops in 80 nations. […]
“I thought my entire life was based on the achievement of the American dream,” he added.
“Yes, I have billions of dollars,” he said. “I earned it. No one gave it to me and I’ve shared it constantly with the people of Starbucks. And so anyone who keeps labeling this billionaire thing, it’s —.”
At that point, Sen. Sanders interjected. “Mr. Schultz, I don’t mean to cut you off,” said the senator. “We have time limits here and you have the opportunity — I’m not cutting you off.”
Schultz: “It’s your — it’s your moniker constantly. It’s unfair.”
Sanders: “No, it is not. You have had more time, I’ve been generous with the time, I’m sorry.” …

I went to the first Starbuck’s store. Didn’t like the coffee, never buy it. But Schultz has my respect for being a self-made man. An idea that works, a brand that’s famous, and coffee most people like. And an enormous amount of effort. My dad was a self-made man too, zero education, and gave us an astonishing life in one of the wealthiest suburbs of Chicago.
I’m on the Starbucks team on this issue, will buy some of their coffee tomorrow.
. Sanders can go suck rocks. May he drop dead in good heath.
You are going to get a lot of blowback on the claim that most people like Starbucks coffee.
People go to Starbucks to look elite.
My dog can make better coffee than Starbucks, and a lot cheaper to boot.
I live in Seattle and don’t get the whole Starbucks thing - I don’t like the taste. But there are lots of people that love it (well - say they love it). It is roasted differently than most beans so it has the burnt (to me) taste.
I’ll drink it if I have to though.
“I came from nothing - now I sell fantastically overpriced bitter coffee and have billions.”
Starbucks taste like coffee that was cooked too long and sat in the pot for too long.
I could never understand why it became so popular.
Screw Starbucks. They took a political position. An anti American, Communist, left wing, Marxist BS position and shoved it down decent people’s throats. Shultz can take his $10 a cup burnt crap and blow it out his ass.
“Schultz has my respect for being a self-made man. An idea that works, a brand that’s famous, and coffee most people like. And an enormous amount of effort. “
I agreee 100%.
I still haven’t quite understood it, but I think Starbucks may be the Harley Davidson of coffee - you pay the most money for the least coffee.
Sanders is execrable.
Circle K makes better coffee than Starbucks.
A company I worked for provided Seattle’s Best coffee for their employees. I liked it more than Starbucks.
"And I hate Republicans and run them down whenever I can and spout the joys of communism while denying my employees the right to form a union."
I’m sorry, I love Starbucks coffee. Growing up in subsidized housing Schultz knew what he had to do to get customer “loyalty”. We received conexs full of Starbucks espresso roast at Camp Victory, Baghdad. I would use it in my coffee pot for 12 cups of the street stuff. I was hooked-up 15 hr.s a day and wired 24/7.
I’m a family man now working a normal gig. I’ve come off the hard stuff and settled on Folgers 100% Colombian.
But bernie you have lots of time. You should share your time with the less fortunate time holders.
It’s this self made man’s own fault…
He decides to support the liberal ideology, then snaps when they turn on him.
He may be a self made man, but he’s learned nothing about the nature of leftist political thought if he believed he wouldn’t have his hand bit by them

You can ruin anything if you apply heat too long. Roasting a coffee bean is like toasting a slice of bread. If you leave it in the roaster/toaster too long you ruin it and that’s what you get with Starbuck’s roast. Heck, some people may like burnt toast and apparently a lot like burnt coffee beans. Instead of burnt, they euphemistically call it ‘dark roast’.
In my experience, few people order a coffee as such at Starbucks, they order various espresso based drinks, I prefer smaller coffee shops with better products at similar prices, but I will go into Starbucks when I don’t have time to hunt down a suitable location on the road. In my more frequented haunts I know where to get a good coffee.
They also serve a lot of pastries and sandwiches. Here again I am not a huge fan and very rarely order one.
They have spent a lot of time building a woke culture and I am quite surprised Bernie Sanders isn’t all in on this left wing corporate success story, I suppose once an idiot socialist, always an idiot socialist.
If you’re in Vancouver BC, try Mario’s coffee express in the downtown core, he makes a very good Americano, and I have often wanted to go into the several nearby Starbucks and spread leaflets informing people that for the same price they can get twice as good a coffee, but Mario can do that on his own dime.
In Green River Utah, I don’t know if there’s a Starbucks or not, probably not, but the coffee shop there on the main street has a sign inside that says “Friends don’t let friends drink Starbucks coffee.”
I am glad the guy gave a plug to wealth creation however. I was briefly in the original Starbucks on a visit to Seattle, it is remarkable to see how this global empire began with one outlet in 1971 if memory serves. Sort of like McDonalds or Dairy Queen I suppose. Who would go to McDonalds for a burger as opposed to a large number of competitors, but millions of people do. Nothing against Dairy Queen but I prefer real ice cream to whatever that is they produce. Oddly enough Dairy Queen has better burgers than most burger chains. IMHO
Succeeding the old-fashioned way isn’t respected in this country anymore. You have to make it through government subsidies, equity, and inclusion.
Starbucks would not send coffee to our military in Iraq.
Ive never been in a Starbucks in my life. I think Dunkin Donuts is good....they dont want my business I figure.
