Biblical flooding in Saudi Arabia sees cars swept away after King prays for rain

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been hit by biblical flooding after the country's king prayed for rain.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud had called on the locals of Saudi Arabia to pray for rain earlier this week.

Due to a lack of rain in recent months, the King, who is also the custodian of the two holy mosques, told his people to “supplicate Allah almighty” and ask for “forgiveness and repentance”.

He also told them to do “good deeds and give charity” all while praying for rainfall.

The official decree came from the Royal Court on Tuesday (November, 22).

And just 24 hours later, the heavens opened – but in the most dramatic fashion.

Video footage posted on social media show waves of water, measuring several feet high, washing cars away down local roads in the cities of Jeddah, Rabigh and Khulais, while according to reports in the Saudi Gazette, schools and universities closed as a result of the devastating floods.

Pupils were in the middle of sitting their end-of-year exams this month, which have now been delayed.

The country's Civil Defence even advised locals to “exercise caution and steer clear from stagnant rainwater and valleys”.

And the rain was so dramatic, that the road to Mecca – Islam's holiest city – was actually closed, which almost never happens.

It had been reported just before the storms that "light to heavy rain and strong winds were expected”, but it appears that the people in the Kingdom had been praying extra hard for rain, and were rewarded by an ocean-load of it

He could have delegated the job to somebody else, like a lesser minister.

Saw the same in Yemen. Many drownings because of the unexpected amount of sudden water while desert Arabs never take swimming lessons. Days later the desert will be a sea of unknown flowers. Seeds that have been lying in the sand for centuries suddenly bloom.

“Biblical floods” in KSA. Odd turn of phrase. Not Koranic floods?

Question for FR literists: What is the name of the linguistic device used when you express things using their opposite?

Blessing can rapidly turn into a curse in the world of Islam.

So Allah may be gracious but the ifrits ( عفاريت ) interfere because of the way women are treated by these misogynists.

What is an ifrit?

Well they look something like this:

Death Valley, certainly earns its name in large parts. But the desert southwest including the Mohave & Death Valley has quite a varied landscape of plants and critters, and once in a while, even an explosion of wildflowers after healthy rains. I guess it’s really something to see.

It’s been my observation that the desert here in America is actually pretty diverse in a lot of ways, you want to see monotony and sterility, get into alpine or above timberline.

Saw much the same when I was over there back in the early 90’s - “cold” day in their winter months (all things being relative, mid-70s is bitterly cold for them) and a little bit of rain one day, next day the desert was a sea of green.

THeir moon god is not allah. Allah is a composite creation of several gods : Baal, and Naanar-sin as well as others.

Irony. Litotes is something like that, too, where the speaker expresses something as the negative of a contradictory word, such as describing a possible event as “not impossible”.
