BEFORE THE EVENTS related in this excerpt, Giancarlo Granda was just another 20-year-old Miami high school graduate: pool attendant at an iconic Miami Beach hotel, eager to please, ambitious, open to suggestion. A chance poolside encounter with Becki and then Jerry Falwell Jr., first-born son of an evangelical legend and his attractive 40-ish wife intrigued him. He acted on a lark, and was suddenly in the middle of a complex sexual affair with Becki. The affair gave Granda a firsthand view of immense wealth, unexpurgated power and unwavering faith, as well as the duplicity and destruction it takes to maintain their illusion.
(The Falwells have denied Granda’s account and insist that Jerry was not a participant in the affair.)
A decade later, it all looks very different. Their predatory nature, abuse of power, complete lack of moral compass and monumental hypocrisy is breathtaking to look back across the full sweep of it. In this excerpt from their new book Off the Deep End: Jerry and Becki Falwell and the Collapse of an Evangelical Dynasty, co-authors Giancarlo Granda and Mark Ebner recount how those first few tentative steps set Granda on a dizzying path to near destruction.
At the tail end of the high season at the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami, on March 13, 2012, I was close to ending my shift at around 4:00 p.m, when I noticed a woman staring at me. She was camped out in my section—maybe in her mid-forties, attractive, fit, and very charismatic, stretched out on one of the poolside daybeds in a bikini. Daybeds are way more comfortable than the lounge chairs, and the going rate was $150 a day, so anyone with a daybed already had my attention.

I was in the religious media and saw Jerry Falwell Sr. in person back in the 1980’s saw nothing dirty going on IMHO.
His father was an alcoholic and yeah if Jerry had an ability to get angry about issues of the day I guess that got passed along.
Jerry Sr. could apologize if he got too angry or said something wrong.
But sexually I don’t recall anything like that.
I read the article, the conversations as described are not even believable in a B movie.
Remember, Jesus said to his disciples, if the evil doers hated them, it’s because they hated him first. If we want to know how they feel about God, watch how they feel about God’s people. 🤗

My story was in USAF Basic Training. I was in the 3726th Training Squadron and as the orderly room runner, was given a detail to escort a slick sleeve Airman, from the Correctional Custody barracks, with the the bars on the windows and concertina wire on the fences, to her mental health clinic appointment. She was very pretty like a young Megan Fox. I walked beside her, but she had to half-step all they way to continue her punishment and humiliation. I tried to talk to her but she whispered that I would get in trouble if anyone saw me talking to her.
The reason she was in custody continues the theme. She turned tricks in the empty Confidence Course (obstacle course/mine field) parking lot one evening with two medical specialists in their ambulance. She might have gotten away with it, but she stole their wallets. Apparently she was given a dishonorable discharge several days later. I have no idea what happened to the permanent party Airmen or NCOs from the ambulance.
When you look at America from God’s vantage point, Falwell was right.

For their part, the Falwells finally addressed the scandal in a 2022 Vanity Fair interview, in which Jerry Jr. denied having known about the affair at its outset.
Becki also said that despite her unfaithful behavior, the couple remains strong and together.
‘We’re together more than any couple you will ever meet in your life. He forgave me, and that’s what Jesus teaches, forgiveness,’ she said.
