A San Antonio police officer has been fired after he shot and injured a 17-year-old multiple times when the boy fled in his car after he startled him in a McDonald's parking lot.
Shocking video shows the moment that Erik Cantu was wounded multiple times while eating a cheeseburger inside of his car after being confronted by Officer James Brennand. An unharmed female passenger was seated next to the victim. She has not been identified.
Cantu was hospitalized at nearby University Hospital. He listed as being in critical but stable condition.
On Wednesday, the San Antonio Police Department acted swiftly in firing Brennand. He was still in his probationary period and had been on the job for just seven months.
Officers initially laid charges against the teenager for evading arrest and assault on a police officer, but those have since been dropped. Under Texas law, due to the fact that the teen had charges pending against him, his family was only permitted to be by his bedside for limited periods of time.
Brennand was called to the McDonald's after a reported disturbance when he noticed Cantu's car outside the restaurant.
The officer thought the car was the same one that evaded him the night before when he attempted to stop the vehicle as the registered license plate didn't match the vehicle.
Brennand approached Cantu's maroon car and called for cover, but quickly tried to take matters into his own hands and opened the car door.
Police have not confirmed whether Cantu's car was stolen.
Prior to the release of the video, Brennand maintained that he only opened fire on Cantu after the teenager hit him with his car.

Since when is a cop allowed to open my car door, my property, without my permission or probable cause?
The kid was literally eating a burger when an unknown assailant threw his door open and started firing.
The cop never identified himself as a police officer.
Sorry, if that were me, I’d do the same... tho I would’ve been trying to kill the mystery assailant with the car before he killed me.
Did this rookie even go into the McDonald’s or just spots a car that might have run from him the night before??? Why open the car door just knock on the window
The audio stops after the cop says the word “license”, sounded like he was calling in the plate before he got to the car and opened the door. If the kid didn’t do anything, all he had to do was get out of the car when told to instead of taking off. Reserving judgment until a follow up story, if any.
They blamed the license plate # from the audio due to privacy concerns.
If the cop had waited for backup, or had gotten in his SUV and pulled behind the car then lit him up before demanding the possible suspect get out of his car, probably it would not have escalated into attempted murder.
I’m not sure cops in New Orleans even bother to enforce the law, anymore, and they’re 600 short asking people who applied in the past, and rejected to apply again.
The entire metro area is filled with speed cameras or red light cameras, vagrants everywhere, graffiti, and my leftie cousins think it’s normal. I never drive there unless I have to and when a pediatrician asked me to take my daughter to Children’s Hospital for further tests, I asked if there was another option, because I hate driving in New Orleans.
I really wish my son would do something else and he’s a cop in the most liberal part of Virginia. Just asking someone nicely to step outside the car could result in getting shot, and it’s cool to resist authority on a local cop. That 17 year old looks like bad news, with his drug dealer haircut, flashing money being a gangsta. I’m pretty sure he’ll be in trouble, again, later in life.
I saw the bodycam footage. It’s a bad shoot. I think he might even get prosecuted for it.

What kind of meat? Let me put it this way: earlier this week it came in dead last at Belmont.

Did the kid die?
I just spent three months on a grand jury.JBT Ping listWe had a guy who demanded to see cop cams on every case where they stayed body cams were turned on. That made sense to me and we got a majority of jurors to join us. By the second month we saw body cam video on every case where it was warranted.
The cops do a good job. It was good to be able to see that three or four times a day. The DA hated it because their video equipment in the grand jury room sucked.
Body cams keep everyone safe.
EXCELLENT!!! Good on you and your fellow jurors!
I hope this spreads.

McSoylent ribs...
They say it's vegan...
The fact we will never get is "did the cop pass his required pre-employment psychiatric evaluation?"
According to Dr. Clarisa Cole fully half the sociopaths she identified were hired anyway.
This has to stop.
Because you didn't want to get shot.
"I thought he was reaching for a weapon, and was is fear for my life" has been used as a bullet proof defense for any number of trigger happy cops.
I made a right on red in WV last week with no one in sight, save a lone car about a 1/4 mile away at a traffic light.
Seconds later, a WV SP car came up behind me in the middle, then shot into the left lane and nearly sideswiped me to get into the right lane.
As I pulled into the parking lot, on came the lights and the little “I need to prove something” cop screamed at me that I just nearly “caused two vehicular accidents by running the red light”.
[since no one else was around, I have to assume he meant the near collision of almost hitting ME with his car]
Then he asked me if I had any illegal stuff in my car, like heroin or fentanyl.
[who on earth ever says “yeah” to that question??]
Then he thought he had me good as he yelled “your registration is expired!!!”.
Bummer that the old card was simply still in the packet on top of the new valid one.
Said the f word several times and wanted to know what that was in my handbag.
[Ziploc bag of home rolled smokes, so disappointing]
Said if he “ever saw me again, he would not be so merciful” and let me go.
Yes, it was the end of the month/quota time and the older cop on hubby’s side of the car looked embarrassed.
Thank God I did not have a dog in the car.
It was for this guy. It almost got him killed. And it might yet. Next time he gets a cheeseburger, he will know to get the hell out of there before he starts eating it. Now a days it is bad for one’s health to be around cops. One is very likely to get lead poisoning.
We now have TWO license plates that we have to pay traffic fines for because the DMV screwed up and issued dupes to other people.
One is the usual small motorcycle tag that also “belongs” to a guy who first had a pickup and now has a Cadillac Escalade.
The second is on a Ford Explore but the traffic pic on the ticket shows a 4 door Taurus-like sedan.
And the DMV will not fix this and does not care.
If he was, he would not be here now. He would be in the next World.
Bureaucracy without a face, hiding far behind the dark dirty curtains of their authority.
I hear that!
The ‘officer’ needs to be charged with attempted murder, IMO. He wasn’t hit with the car and he drew and fired against department policy against it (per the police chief). PLUS, he undoubtedly knew there was a passenger in the car.
