A Ukrainian mother-of-three has been pictured arming herself with a huge rifle as thousands of the nation's civilians prepare for the prospect of a Russian invasion.
Mariana Zhaglo is far from a typical Ukrainian soldier, but the 52-year-old marketing researcher has said she is willing to do whatever it takes.
'As a mother I do not want my children to inherit Ukraine's problems, or have these threats passed on to them. It is better that I deal with this now,' Mariana said.
'If it comes to it then we will fight for Kiev; we will fight to protect our city. If there is a need for the shooting to start, then I'll start shooting,' the mother continued, as she showed off her newly-bought Zbroyar Z-15 rifle in her flat in the Ukrainian capital.
She went on to explain that the Zbroyar Z-15 is a hunting rifle, but that she has no intentions of hunting.
'I have never hunted in my life. I bought this carbine after listening to some soldiers discussing the best rifle to get,' Mariana told The Times.
The marketing researcher is just one of thousands of Ukrainians who recently joined the nation's Territorial Defence Forces (TDF)
It comes as UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee that intelligence suggests Russia's elite forces may have already crossed the border into Ukraine.
'Any crossing into Ukraine, whether small or large, would be viewed as a breach of that sovereignty, against international law and an invasion.
'You can't be half-pregnant, you are either invading a country or you are not.'
British special forces are also preparing to deploy to Ukraine
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron today became the latest Western leader to promise a 'retaliation' should Russia proceed with an invasion of its neighbour.

My goodness... some of those people weren’t thinking of getting in a gunfight when they picked out their new winter coats at... Wherever Ukrainians buy their coats.
Trump sent about 250 Javelins. Even weak azzed Biden sent in 180 Javelins and covertly sent in Stingers.
Russia will win the war put Russian tankers and infantry on helos will pay the price, returning in body bags.
Putin could care less. But, the President for Life will likely back down to the weakest US President in history.
They don’t even need to invade. Have those areas conduct a plebiscite and ask Russia to save them. Everyone will look at the situation the same as they did for Crimea.

Sorry, but a 223 is not a sniper round - not close. And I personally prefer a lighter AR-15.

In America we cook a lot and use the kitchen. Can’t say we use the weapons for freedom though.
We use them for huntin’ and then we need the kitchen to cook the critters.

I a do have an emotion. Some of those Z’s are nice guns and we can’t get them.
We sold out the Ukraine in the 90’s. While that sucks, anyone who trusts the US government (or any State) to hold up an arrangement is a fool.
Assume the bastard on the other side of the table will cheat you in every contract and work from there.
Yet more British war mongering propaganda. Some (non-UK) publication investigated this woman and it turns out she is in the Ukranian equivalent of the Army National Guard with a .gov issued rifle. Why is the UK so damned intent on going to war with Russia, other than the fact the the US will wind up doing the fighting for them.
I would rather have a top notch sniper rifle than a fancy Quisenart mixer!
My neighbor and I held two Sheriff’s Deputies at gunpoint until they ID’d. Their State Police ‘backup’ ran away several minutes earlier.
Retired Army and retired Navy working together. We started nothing, but we sure as hell put an end to their entering private property without a warrant.
The Sheriff refused to speak with us.
Break the law, trespass and conduct an illegal search makes you a target in my area. Threatened nobody until two thugs with badges decided to push the issue.
