A member of the European Parliament suggested to the European Central Bank (ECB) on Sunday that BioNTech founders Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci be depicted on one of the notes.
German Free Democrat (FDP) politician Moritz Körner was the first one to make the suggestion.
“Important European figures like the BioNTech founding couple Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci should be printed on the new euro notes,” said Körner, as quoted by German newspaper Welt am Sonntag. “Their work has saved the lives of millions of Europeans. The trajectory of their life is an impressive story about integration, progress, entrepreneurship, scientific excellence and the potential of an open immigrant society,” he added.
Türeci and Sahin founded the Mainz-based company BioNTech. In a partnership with the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer, BioNTech developed an mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine which is among the inoculations being used to stem the tide of the pandemic. …

If you look at currency designs prior to the Roosevelt dime, they usually represented something like freedom, or justice. They were artistic and lovely to look at. But more and more they represent political statements. I don’t think anyone should appear on a currency note or coin until time has made a judgement on their contribution to society. Say, dead for a hundred years. Knowing what we know now about J. F. Kennedy would we have put his likeness on a coin? (The Kennedy half dollar, for those of you who have never seen one.) And, Roosevelt was just one ugly MF. I haven’t actually admired any currency designs, American or foreign in decades.
How do we know their vax saved millions of lives? The data does not support this. Less than 5% of all Covid deaths in Europe were people who were NOT obese or over 70. If you take out co-morbidities in total (data not avail) I wonder what the figure is. Not anything like 1918 where 20-somethings and teens dropped like flies.

All the while the pandemic is at an all time high here in the states and elsewhere with most of Europe and the US at 50%+ vaccination rates.
