LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria destroyed more than 1 million expired doses of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday after authorities said they could not be used before their expiration date.
Faisal Shuaib, head of Nigeria’s National Primary Health Care Development Agency, said health officials in Africa's most populous country were left with little choice after receiving the donated doses that didn't have much shelf life left.
“We had developed countries that procured these vaccines and hoarded them," he said. “At the point they were about to expire, they offered them for donation.”
Last week Shuaib had announced that Nigeria would no longer accept such donations, though he did not specify publicly what officials considered too short a shelf life.
Only 2% of Nigeria's 206 million people are fully vaccinated, and health officials have set an ambitious goal of vaccinating more than a quarter of the population by February. While hesitancy has been high, the country's vaccination rate has nearly doubled over the past week.

Hey Congress: I just found some of that fraud, waste and abuse that you’re always looking to pay for everything with.
At least we are not paying for their houses, food, cellphones, internet service, hospital insurance, special school programs, justice programs, crime, rape, robbery, murder, prisons, and more and more and more. After years, rebranding hasn’t changed the results. I’m glad I don’t live in Nigeria!

Gee, Nigeria. Weren’t you one of those countries that didn’t want to be a ‘white man’s guinea pig’? And then when you need vaccines, you trash them because you have 60 days to use them (not to mention the use by date has been pushed a few months)??? Now you accuse the ‘white man’ of ‘hoarding’ ??? Why did Nigeria accept them to begin with, when 50 other countries would have gladly taken and used them? Nobody’s seen your labs cranked up to make your own vaccine, now have they?
I’m convinced 90% of the world is bathanging nuts in their ability to think and process logic.
I doubt they were expired when donated to the UN distribution program.
Not sure about the rest of the EU, but the US was the first and the UK followed Trump’s policy that no doses would be donated until there were enough doses for every American (or Brit). The UK, at 90% vaccinated, now can donate a lot of doses. The US has donated millions of doses in spite of the policy, but at a median age of 17=19 (nigeria is 18.3) most of Africa is low-risk to begin with, until a mutation like omi comes along that attacks younger folks.
