"The Worst U.S. Presidents" by Ranker Community

The Worst U.S. Presidents

The U.S. presidents whose administrations were the worst-run, most ill-fated, or most corrupt.

The worst U.S. presidents of all time, measured by their negative impact on the nation, its citizens health and happiness, and its future prosperity. (In some cases - such as the popular selections of Warren G. Harding and Richard Nixon - the negative view of the president and his administration is due to various scandals and perceived corruption within its ranks. Nixon remains the only president to step down from the office amid threats of impeachment.)

Much of a president's job - including serving as the figurative head of the American state and setting the nation's general legislative and diplomatic agenda - is sort of intangible and hard to evaluate in strict "good vs. bad" terms. This makes any list of the "best" or "worst" US presidents essentially subjective, and though there were administrations with a significant series of positive or negative outcomes, it's rarely clear just how much these had to do with the person in office and how many were simply due to accidents of fate or circumstance. Nonetheless, in particularly extraordinary cases - such as the administration of Abraham Lincoln, which kept the nation intact during the Civil War crisis, or the administration of Andrew Johnson immediately after that threatened the entire success of the Reconstruction project - it is clear which presidents did an overall good or bad job.

So who were the worst presidents of all time? We're ranking them here, based on your votes! When you've had enough political negativity, be sure to check out Ranker's ultimate uplifting presidential list: The Best US Presidents.

At this time in our last presidents tenure, some lists were already ranking him. I was wondering if the same held for the current one.

I was surprised at how this list has evolved

Who needs a list. Pretty much any modern Democrat President. One can reasonably argue the rankings.

Don’t even both with the list. It’s Ranker, which is nothing but an online polling turnstile: to get an idea, they have Obama is ranked as 6th worst and 15th best. lol

I have always considered Buchanan the worst, followed by Wilson, Lyndon Johnson, Obama, Carter and FDR.

LBJ Started the Great Society and put us firmly on the road to Bankruptcy.

He also signed into law the immigration act of 1965, which just might end the USA.

The worst of my lifetime (starting with Truman):

W
LBJ
Carter
Osama Obama

The jury’s still out on Plugs and Heels Up,but my hunch is that they can both surpass Osama Obama as the worst.

If I were to rank the post-war Republicans:

1) Reagan - Won the Cold War and revived America
2) Eisenhower - Something of a figurehead but ran America at its greatest
3) Trump - Big plans, hobbled by bad appointments
4) Ford - didn’t last long enough to do anything for good or ill
5) HW Bush - won the Gulf war, failed at most else
6) Nixon - his main legacy, the alliance with China, is looking worse every year
7) W Bush - Two disastrous wars and collapsed the global economy

Poles for the worst, the smartest, the this, the that for US Presidents, maybe there ought to be pole for the most corrupt, criminal, crookedest US President.

Putting Trump as one of the worst is purely political. We had a very strong economy, low levels of illegal immigration, several middle east peace deals, a revised NAFTA, NO WAR, etc.

Putting the disastrous administration of LBJ higher is ridiculous. Even Carter was better than LBJ. Carter was saddled with all the problems LBJ created—paying for a war that we lost and the unsuccessful “Great Society”, both at the same time. I’d put Carter ahead of LBJ. And I lived through both.

We're ranking them here, based on your votes!

Sure. What could go wrong there?

This makes any list of the "best" or "worst" US presidents essentially subjective, and though there were administrations with a significant series of positive or negative outcomes, it's rarely clear just how much these had to do with the person in office and how many were simply due to accidents of fate or circumstance.

True, but you have to have some kind of standard and justify your choices based on something more than whether or not you agree with a president.

One problem with these lists is that Nineteenth Century presidents had an easier job than Twentieth (or Twenty-First) Century presidents. Another is that some of the presidents have come to be seen as truly reprehensible in their views: how do you weigh their achievements against your opinion of their moral stature?

Buchanan and Pierce were the worst presidents because they did nothing to keep the country from falling apart. Also bad, Tyler, Fillmore, Hoover, Carter, GW Bush. I wouldn't begin to know how to rate the others. How do you weigh FDR's achievements in keeping the country going during the Depression and in winning the war on the one hand against his many bad policies and bad influence on the other? Lyndon Johnson was a terrible president, but not without a few significant achievements on civil rights. Madison got us into an unnecessary war that saw the capital burned, but people ended up feeling really good about the country after the war. Polk was very pro-slavery and his war has been called unjust, but without him we wouldn't have California and the Southwest.
