Disbelief and betrayal: Europe reacts to Biden’s Afghanistan ‘miscalculation’

Until Sunday, Europe thought Joe Biden was an expert on foreign policy.

Now, the American president’s decision to allow Afghanistan to collapse into the arms of the Taliban has European officials worried he has unwittingly accelerated what his predecessor Donald Trump started: the degradation of the Western alliance and everything it is supposed to stand for in the world.

Across Europe, officials have reacted with a mix of disbelief and a sense of betrayal. Even those who cheered Biden’s election and believed he could ease the recent tensions in the transatlantic relationship said they regarded the withdrawal from Afghanistan as nothing short of a mistake of historic magnitude.

“I say this with a heavy heart and with horror over what is happening, but the early withdrawal was a serious and far-reaching miscalculation by the current administration,” said Norbert Röttgen, chairman of the German parliament’s foreign relations committee. “This does fundamental damage to the political and moral credibility of the West.” […]

At a time when some European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have been pushing for the bloc to pursue a security policy less dependent on America, Afghanistan is bound to be used as evidence for why “strategic autonomy” is necessary.

“Naturally this has damaged American credibility, along with that of the intelligence services and of the military,” said Rüdiger Lentz, the former head of the Aspen Institute in Berlin. “One can only hope that the damage to America’s foreign policy leadership can be quickly contained.” …

Well, to miscalculate, you first need to be able to calculate.

In the end, it's just Joe being Joe...

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't thought about it before, but if the policy of our military was that the General in charge of any operational theatre can't leave until every soldier has been evacuated from that location, I guarantee they'd be a little more thoughtful about how they did troop withdrawals.

Leaders ‘LEAD’. Bureaucrats and ladder climbers slither.

The “West” with its advocacy of liberalism and perversion ain’t worth defending. NATO is part of the degeneracy.

They will have to do what President Trump tried to get them to do, and start paying for their own defense.

I hope this doesn't impact any of their socialist giveaway programs.

Moronic.

They just cannot admit if Trump was at the helm it would have looked nothing like this. Trump wanted us out because it was a moneypit of corruption. That would have lead him to insist upon a deal that kept America looking effective. Trump’s whole motivation was to strengthen America.

Biden only had the goal of hurting America to continue the deconstruction of our respect in the world. So a mob at the airport, hanging off planes, the Taliban capturing billions worth of gear, the embassy fleeing WORKS for Biden.

Few people advocated staying longer. But the WAY we departed was decide by whether you hate America or love America.

The EU elites have been planning to pay for their own defense for decades. They also have been planning, once they have consolidated such military power, to use it against the USA once they have sucked the USA dry of its military power or, if not altogether that, the USA’s will to use it.

Take a look at the EU’s anti-American stance over the decades. That is an enemy you want to keep down, not allow to rise up as Xiden allowed the Taliban to rise back up.

No doubt. That’s exactly what the deal was. Trump had already made the place more stable than ever believed possible. There had been no US troop deaths in 18 months. Not a single one.

It’s so heartbreaking and infuriating to see the world on fire again after so much incredible and unthinkable progress had been made in that area of the world. It is just...I can’t even come up with the words. The amount of damage Biden has done to this country in such a short period of time is beyond what description...and none of his had to happen but for the stupid and corrupt decisions made by his administration.

Very interesting. That report mentioned that the Afghan army trained by the Soviets was starting to fall apart as the Soviets were leaving, and guerillas were massing to take over the country. I wonder if Afghan warlords will start fighting with the Taliban again. If they do, I sure hope the CIA and taxpayer money are not secretly backing them.

Our Department of State has been working against the interests of the United States for decades. It worked against President Trump. It spends money to bribe dictators around the world. And it absolutely screws to military with it’s back stabbing CIA partners. Un elected bureaucrats with a lifetime job have no reason to consider the people who pay their salaries.
