Serious speculation about the “real” use and/or structure of Stonehenge goes back at least to the architect Inigo Jones (late 16th early 17th c):

Mallory referred to Stonehenge in Morte d’Arthur, and like Jones and others, believed the Romans had built it, following Geoffrey of Monmouth’s 12th c “History of Britain”. The earliest known illustration of Stonehenge is 14th c.
