Tana Douglas had just lit her second cigarette, 30 or so minutes into a conversation with George Harrison, when the former Beatle said: “I would marry you tomorrow if you gave up smoking.”
It was 1979 and the two were hiding out in the kitchen at a party hosted by Harrison’s neighbor Jon Lord, keyboardist for the heavy metal band Whitesnake. In the living room, a stripper — a birthday present to Harrison that embarrassed him — danced to the Beatles’ “She Loves You.”
Douglas was the only woman there who wasn’t a stripper. The first female roadie in rock ’n’ roll, she hauled equipment and ran lighting for some of the biggest bands in the world — and often saw them at their worst. Besides Whitesnake, she toured with Elton John (“During his brat years, he did drugs and threw tantrums”), Ozzy Osbourne, INXS, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Police and the Go-Go’s.

I believed Anita.
Roadie chicks; certainly a first class reliable source.
Iggy Pop is a creep. This woman’s story is interesting.
No reason to suggest Ms. Douglas or anyone else working backstage in unreliable. Most people doing that work don't say a word about what they see on the job until years later.
One of my neighbors was the road manager for Three Dog Night for a decade - great guy but obviously destroyed a lot of brain cells during the 70’s.
I have a hundred stories I could tell.
Harrison had a point about the smoking....yeeccchhh
“A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much.” Proverbs 20:19.
Well, I don’t have much confidence in rock stars, so it is fun to read gossip about them.
Well let’s hear a couple!
Her book may be full of colorful and interesting stories, but it’s about 30 years too late to have much impact.
Most of the Rock Icons’ (mis) adventures and wild acting out described in her book has been common knowledge to fans or culture historians. Who doesn’t already know that Iggy Pop was a self destructive doper who lived to shock or repulse people. He was even too much for David Bowie to help.
The one thing unique about this woman’s story is that she has survived to tell it with a relatively clear mind and a light sense of humor still intact. Marianne Faithful survived it too, and more, but she seem to be stuck in pondering what has been lost. A permanent case of The Blues.
“Well, I don’t have much confidence in rock stars. .”
and yet, I would vote Iggy Pop for President over Corn Pop,
Okay, I'll bite! How about telling at least THREE, right here and now?
Regards,
Kissing a woman who has been smoking is like licking an ashtray.
Saying he would marry her tomorrow if she quit smoking isn’t even remotely the same as a marriage proposal. More like a quip.
One of my children describes how many of these musicians were sexually involved with minor females; a lot of it is public record. Took a lot of luster off them when he found out...
I’m not one to “kiss and tell” so to speak.I was paid good money to do what I did during those years and it didn’t include revealing the back stage activities. Suffice it to say it truly is a world of sex, drugs and rock and roll.
I believe Tara Reade.
You couldn't do that on American TV. Maybe pretty soon, though.
