It would have been a jarring image no matter the president.
We're used to seeing the American flag handled in a number of ways. It can be hoisted, saluted, folded in honor of the fallen, even burned in protest.
But it's not every day you see the leader of the free world hug the flag in front of a crowd of adoring followers.
Enter President Donald Trump on Saturday at the annual gathering of conservatives known as the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). He grabbed an unassuming Old Glory by its stand like a prom date, and gave it a brief, slightly terrifying, slow-dance to "Proud to be an American."
In that moment, in a way, the flag was so many of us -- Americans recoiling at the smothering and unwanted advances of an unstable lech. On behalf of the flag, I wanted to shout: "I beg your pardon, sir! Get your hands off of me!"
But as off-putting as Trump's grabbing of the stars and stripes felt to many, it was clearly a consensual act to his supporters, who loved every minute of it and the 122 that followed.

I considered that as a display of love for the flag by the President. S.E. Cupp can ESAD.
I was a bit taken aback by his hug of the flag as well. But yes - it was a display of how much he loves America. I wonder if this gal has ever written of the ugly acts against the flag performed by Antifa, hippies, or Bill Ayers?

How presumptuous of you to compare yourself to Old Glory. That which once was glorious about you is long since slid into the swampy mire.
I have a talent for accurately envisioning what women will look like as they age.
This one is not looking good, in fact, it looks rather ghastly.
The downside of such talent is in the difficulty of shaking off the visions. This one will cause nightmares.
Just remember skanks like this when they try to come get back into our good graces post Trump six years from now. Treat them like Jane Fonda. Never forgive, never forget.
So many Flag Code violations she could write about she chose something that isn’t. (Unless the flag touched the ground when he hugged it.)
