Dem: Cohen filing means Trump committed two felonies
The Hill ^ | December 7, 2018 | Chris Mills Rodrigo

Posted on 12/08/2018 3:58:16 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) argued Friday that federal prosecutors' latest filing in a case involving President Trump's former longtime attorney Michael Cohen means that Trump allegedly committed two felonies.

Lieu, a member of the House Judiciary Committee and frequent Trump critic, told MSNBC's Chris Matthews on "Hardball" that "we have a sitting president of the United States who committed two felonies while running for president.”....

As I understand it, if he would’ve used his own money upfront, I don’t think there would be an issue. What muddies the waters is Cohen using his money upfront and Trump reimbursing him. Hopefully someone smarter than me can make the case for why it isn’t a campaign finance violation. My view is that the payment was going to be made no matter what. Trump just happened to be running for President. The effect on the campaign was incidental. There may be other, better arguments too, but I’m pretty tired right now.

I absolutely do NOT believe that Trump would knowingly commit multiple felonies. He didn’t run his campaign for winning “by any means necessary”. It’s the Democrats who must resort to such tactics. Trump won because he’s a winner and because the Democrats are losers who are sometimes lucky enough or have lied and cheated enough to ‘win’. They simply can’t afford to be honest and that’s why they run to win by any means necessary, and “by any means necessary” means exactly what it says.

Fake felonies that have nothing to do with RUSSIA COLLUSION.

I smell boiled cabbage, urine and dope smoke, All of this nonsense is because the president told Mrs Clinton that he was going to put her in jail. I’ve no doubt she’ll finger Obama in high crimes when the butcher comes for his bill. The butcher being the president.

Best Election Ever

Paying monies to p people who threaten suit is often part of a settlement agreement which is a legitimate way to get rid of nuisance suits. They usually include a confidentiality agreement. No talking about it.

Million reasons to do so.

Lawyer Cohen had duty of confidentiality also and Mueller’s raid on his confidential files is literally unheard of and should have been challenged.

But so what is the felony?

I missed it in Lieu’s statement?

Yes. The GOP lets the DNC commit all kinds of serious crimes and —- does nothing. Nada. It’s sickening. And gop is letting the soroznazi- dnc destroy our representative system of governance. I’m glad I won’t be around for the story’s of their 4th Reich, USA style. It’s coming for sure - we’re halfway there already - it will only take a single additional sorozNazi- dnc puppet administration

The bizarre reinterpretation of campaign finance laws, according to AP, is that any money spent to, as they say, “influence” an election (according to whatever they define it to be) that does not get reported in campaign finance filings is an “offense”. Ain’t that cut and dried?

What they’re trying to say is that spending any money that ends up in some way influencing an election and it doesn’t get reported on campaign finance filings as such is somehow a violation of campaign finance laws. Real twisted, isn’t it?

Why does it matter where the money came from? If Stormy is extorting money from Trump with the intent of damaging the campaign if not payed then can it be a campaign expense as would legal expenses.

In any case this comes down to a he said, he said. His lawyer is not a credible witness. Unless there is written or a recorded record there is nothing there.

No Reasonable Prosecutor Would Bring Such A Case.

I’m probably not the first to point out that we’re not dealing with a reasonable prosecutor, so....

“Two words: John Edwards”

Yup. Stare decisis, right?

It’s settled law. Mueller might wanna change it, and Preet Bharara’s leftovers can push it but...it’s done

Trump didn't pay with his own money. Cohen partially paid with his own money (via a fraudulently acquired HELOC), and raised some from AMI to pay the rest. The specific criminal accusation is "campaign contributions in excess of federal limits".

I'm sure the reason Mueller is desperate to interview Trump is to try and get him to contradict something Cohen secretly recorded him saying. No one trusts Cohen, but the tapes are dangerous.

I don't think there is any crime here, unless Trump falls into a perjury trip. He needs to tell Mueller to piss off and deliver the report. If there is no collusion, and there isn't, then there will be no impeachment.

The Republicans let the dems indict and charge them for the most petty of petty non crimes, yet the dems and their ilk get away with major felonies and heinous crimes. It’s just sickening what’s been going on with the Clintons and all the rest of them.

At this point we are not dealing with anything that is reasonable, or legal as far as the Department of Justice and its Enforcement Arms are concerned. The law is what they say it is. The violations are what they desire. The courts are kangaroo. Stalin and Hitler had a more neutral court system than we have presently.

The Department of Justice needs to be renamed the Department of Courts.

The article says spending money to influence an election is a felony. Isn’t that what financing a campaign is all about?

Sure.

But there were plenty of reasons for silencing these two bimbos besides the campaign.

A candidate is forbidden from spending campaign money for personal purposes, but he can spend his own money to do so, and it is perfectly legal.
