Yes, they may have authority to investigate the President for crimes he may or may not have committed while in office, but they have no jurisdiction to investigate his past tax returns before he was elected.
Trump’s lawyers should just cite Watkins vs. United States and refuse:
“Watkins v. United States, 354 U.S. 178 (1957), is a decision of the Supreme Court of the United States that held that the power of the United States Congress is not unlimited in conducting investigations and that nothing in the US Constitution gives it the authority to expose individuals’ private affairs.”

Without the Senate or the President, she can’t do jack. Ironically the markets will rally knowing there’s 2 years of gridlock ahead. And Trump and the Senate can continue to rule by EO and appoint Judges. In the meantime, the House Democrats will be like their Senate Judiciary Panel on steriods. Unlikable, nasty, vile people on display for America to see. This will not end well for them.
They can not play nice even if their own existence depends on it.

Don’t be surprised. She is utterly stupid and thinks shes untouchable. That is what will be her undoing. She is the next Mayor Nagin. He was another one who thought being a black democrat meant the law does not apply to him. Maxine Waters makes Nagin look like a rocket scientist.
